Hi guys,
As part of my course I need to organise a 4 week elective from June/July time to August 2013. I have an interest in othropaedics and/or emergency medicine as a future career and feel ski medicine brings both of these fields together in a unique way (plus the bonus of working in resort and getting skiing of course!) I am trying to get in contact with anyone who would be willing to, or would know of someone who would, take me as a student to do this. Problem is a lot of places either don't take students anymore or are full already!!
So far have been unsuccessful at Mt Buller and Turoa.
So now the begging part....does anyone know a doctor, nurse, manager or anyone who may be able to help try and get this going? Obviously the annoying time Glasgow put the elective limits me to Southern Hemisphere mainly bar a few glaciers that I doubt have full time med centres over summer.
Any help would be much appreciated,

mattdebbage, I wpuld get on the phone and try a lot of places. Look up the primary health care facilities near ski areas, if not try the local hospitals such as Christchurch or Dunedin.

Is there really such a thing as "ski medicine"? Nice idea, though.

Is there no way they can let you move your elective period? Would improve your chances!
I've heard of dive medicine and altitude medicine, but never ski medicine.
If you wanted something in the mountains, maybe altitude medicine would be worth a look, although I'm not sure how much skiing you'd get. I'm guessing you're a medical student or a nursing student? The Student BMJ & the BMJ occasionally have advertisements in for altitude medicine.
If its purely ortho +/- emergency you want, rather than the ski element, there are much better places in the world to get experience in these than a ski med centre. Any major trauma centre hospital (North America, Europe, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand etc) would give you brilliant experience.

In France somewhere like Les Deux Alpes or Tignes where there is glacier skiing in the summer. I suspect there will be more mountain biking injuries though.

My mate did her elective in NZ, can't remember where (wasn't near the skiing), but she seemed to spend 95% of the time she was there out partying/sightseeing/etc, apparently they don't expect you to 'work' much...

I'm not sure that 'ski medicine' is a field in it's own right. The injuries that occur in skiing are not unique to skiing.
I think any medical professional with experience in trauma or fractures would be enough to deal with most skiing injuries. Even hypothermia or asphyxia from avalanche incidents are both issues that could be experienced in the high street. The mechanism of injury might be different, certainly, but the injuries and treatments aren't.
Dive or Altitude medicine are specific fields as they are dealing with the effects of pressure.
Rather than 'ski medicine', maybe try and promote it as normal trauma and/or fracture but with a specialism in skiing related injuries.

Sorry perhaps I wasnt clear with my post, I wasn't meaning 'ski medicine' as a speciality was what I was looking to do as as you have pointed out this doesnt exist. What I was meaning was I could do an elective in the UK doing the same things as I would be doing in a ski resort (same injuries etc) but the experience of doing it in resort and being involved with all the steps is something not really possible in many places other than ski resorts. Obviously as I am a member on here I also have the swaying influence of liking to ski!
A few previous students have done electives in AUS/NZ resorts and come back with very positive reviews, lots of hands on from working with ski patrol to dealing with day to day GP clinics. Basically it gives you a huge breadth of things to do and see all with the backdrop of skiing!
Chile is an option, Just emailed the medical clinic in the main hotel in portillo this morning so see if anything comes back!

Thanks, have just sent them an equiry. Have also emailed a few of the more obscure Australian resorts in the hope that they aren't fully booked up!
Got to admit the Portello hotel clinic in Chile looks like an awesome one if it is a possibilty!

I did my elective years ago in Wanaka at Cardrona. Unfortunately they no longer take medical students as far as I am aware, and the doc I did it with is back in OZ. Was an amazing couple of months though...sending an email with cv to patrol@cardrona.com might be worth a shout though. Similar id have a look around the official websites for treble Cone, Coronet Peak, Remarkables, and Mount Hutt. Good luck!

mattdebbage, contact the med centre in Chamonix - all year traffic - you can get to them via the gendamerie in Chamomix (you might get a few helicopter rides in) also med centre in Zermatt is all year round.

Resurrecting this thread in hope of doing something in 2022. Living in the UK but have an EU passport and also am eligible for Canadian citizenship. Any ideas from people who have managed to sort this out in the past gratefully recieved.

@brovert, How good are your languages ? Wouldn't you need to be bilingual to work in Canada ?
The medical centre in Tignes has had trainees working there, the one who stitched up my head wasn't very good at it.

I have 2 friends who have been (one still is) doctors in Canada (Calgary and Vancouver; I suspect Montreal might be different!).
One spoke basic GCSE French, one spoke none at all. Their medical qualifications were the defining factor.

@mattdebbage, I hope it works out for you. My youngest son looked into doing his elective with an eye to skiing and medicine but inspite of being offered a potential placement (contacts in France) he decided against it. He felt the language issues (although he`s not bad in French) and the somewhat limited experience mitigated against it being that beneficial to his career. If you can get a placement somewhere speaking a language you are fluent in, that will offer you good experience I`m sure it could work well, but it won`t be easy. Good luck.

I think just to be clear this will be a 2 month placement in March and April. French is conversational but Italian and Finnish pretty good.
