I'm worried that it's only 60:40 that we'll have something akin to a 'normal' ski season next year. Please hit me with facts to convince me it's better than that! Cheers.

Those folding skis are genius engineering and now only need to find a market/purpose.

We decided last year that, having driven for the first time, that's the only way we're going in the future.

Erm
First year of vaccinations should be largely done.
Politicians/societies may have grown up into this is something we're going to have to live with if we ever want to function economically again.
US/ Canada/ Austria suggests that it's not the actual outdoor bit of skiing that is much of a transmission risk.
Against that xenophobia/ paranoia/ new variants
60/40 or 70/30 feels about right but only 10/90 on it including banging apres.

Whats “normal”? Able to travel U.K. - Europe, ski lifts open, restaurants on mountain and in village open, able to have a beer after skiing. 95:05.
Mooserwirt - not so much.

Biggest barrier will be anti-vax particularly in France. Even here in normally efficient CH the vaccine roll-out is painfully slow.

We looked at a hotel in Selva for Jan 22 and will more than likely book it this week. Chilled 1/2 board week taking my parents so not exactly a raucous event.

Booked flights to Inns for Dec.
Im 40:60 we will be allowed to travel.
France is completely off the menu. Just because I am vaccinated, does not mean I am protected. There is still going to be a % with whatever vaccine who will not be protected.
The uptake in France is probably going to be quite low compared to other westernised nations.
Hoping for Italy in March as well.

Vaccine uptake is low and rollout in Austria is progressing slowly. I'm almost certain that Germans will be welcomed here next winter, but anyone else is a guess right now.

@queenie pretty please, Are people actually refusing it? I haven't seen anything about that, though surveys continually point to low acceptance. About 86,000 have registered online in Tirol in the last 4 days (total population ~750,000), which seems pretty good considering the website is a bit flakey and large groups of the population are ineligible for registration in this way (children, over 80s, care home residents, health workers etc).

@Scarlet, as you say the surveys seem to suggest low acceptance. There's no registration yet in Salzburg that I'm aware of. I think they are still working through medical personnel and care home residents.

I'm a bit skeptical of the survey results, I can't really believe there will be less than 50% uptake in some western countries. Especially as we start to see the positive effects of the vaccination.

@boarder2020, I agree. I think if there were large numbers of people refusing to be vaccinated, we'd be hearing about it.
The Austrian govt have launched an information campaign to help dispel vaccine myths and encourage people to sign up, but I haven't got a good read on how successful it is so far. I've only seen a few posts on FB, and as you'd expect, they're full of anti-vaxxers trolling nonsense.

And... to what extent do governments in say, France or Austria, remain hostages of fortune to 'refusenicks'. "The people refuse the vaccine, so we'll have to stay locked down forever, or until it does a Trump*".
* Just 'goes away'.
That can't go on forever, surely?

I think you have to be positive, but I wouldn't go about looking to lock in bookings etc just yet.
We have seen the world change radically in short spaces of time and have seen holidays literally fall to pieces in some cases hours before people were due to depart.
That said I think that Self Catering is the go next year....and probably driving so I would probably be getting car documents sorted at a minimum.

When you have socialised health care the solution to the "refusenicks" is simple. If they refuse the vaccine when offered (without a genuine medical reason) should they subsequently fall ill the cost of their medical care is not covered by the socialised health care. Nice publicity campaign along with an idea what the cost would be should make them think twice.
I would also clamp down on the COVID and vaccine disinformation in social media. I would make it clear that without a medical qualification it is "practising medicine without a license" which is illegal and will be treated as such. Should you actually have a medical qualification it will be gross misconduct and get you thrown out of your relevant professional body. Then any further nonsense would be "practising medicine without a license" which is illegal.
I would then introduce massive fines to social media companies for allowing people to "practise medicine without a license" on their platform. That get even bigger if they can't identify the actual real person involved. For the most part no posting for 30 days from account setup without a nominal payment from a credit/debit card if you want to post before then. Along with one strike deletion of accounts when notified by an appropriate regulatory body would flush this from social media very quickly.
The answer is simple, the will to do is basically not there.

Is it reasonable to ask other people to pay many thousands possibly hundreds of thousands of pounds for your stay in hospital because you refused to take a treatment that would most likely have prevented it? I think you will have a very difficult time coming up for a good argument for that. Logically if it's not reasonable to expect other people to pay then you get to pay for it yourself. Follow the USA model, you can't be refused treatment but you may well end up selling your house or bankrupt paying for it. That was your choice, and being an adult comes with responsibility for the choices you make.
If I sent out a mass mail shot offering bogus advice on the COVID-19 vaccines to peoples houses, I think I would rather quickly find myself in trouble courtesy of the The Medical Act (1983) for unregistered practising of medicine. So what's your legal argument that doing the same over social media is legal? If you are a registered medical practitioner then giving bogus advice about the vaccines is professional misconduct. What's the issue with enforcing a 38 year old law? Do you have some particular issue with the The Medical Act (1983) that you wish to share?
If you want to put together a cognisant argument about what I said that's fair enough. Reactionary slinging of insults is the intellectual cowardice of someone who can't make a rational argument against something.

The way things are going at the moment I am a lot more confident than that (maybe 90:10 though I am not a betting man good at calculating odds) that there will be "a" ski season. But rather less than 60:40 it will be "normal".
Not sure I can justify that with facts though. I do think after losing a whole season (which they will, at least) there will be a very strong incentive on politicians to allow opening up. And I do think that by the time autumn comes all European countries will have a high (though varying) proportion of their population vaccinated. But I am also realistic that the politicians will drift into a position of over-confidence as they did last summer, and there will be enough of a panic response when cases inevitably rise again to introduce moderate restrictions. Those might be quite mild such as a need to wear masks on enclosed lifts, to slightly problematic such as reduced capacity in catering locations which might restrict travellers other than self-catering, to quite onerous travel restriction to those now outside the EU (completely self-inflicted in our case).
But quite honestly, who knows? Some of us are even hoping tenuously for a few weeks at end March beginning April this year, but that is more wishful than rational thinking.

It's a slippery slope. ACL injury from skiing? You could have easily prevented that by choosing a safer hobby. Overweight, drink alcohol, smoke? No treatment for you!
Fwiw I completely agree that not taking the vaccine is incredibly stupid and irresponsible, I just dont see you solution working. The surveys mentioned above show that there is a correlation with not wanting to take a vaccine and lower education and income. It's all well and good slapping a huge bill on someone, but a lot of these people don't have the ability to pay. Sure you could go after their house, but then you are creating even more problems for society.

I wouldn’t ban treatment for people who have refused a vaccination but on the other hand, I wouldn’t delay the removal of restrictions just in case they might get ill.
They’ve made their bed and need to accept the consequences of the decision they’ve made. In practice, I think the ‘vaccine refusers’ are more like ‘vaccine hesitants’ who will get on board once they see people aren’t dropping dead after being vaccinated. I suspect that a few well publicised examples of people dying of COvid having refused will get them on the phone to their GP fairly quickly.

I think the probability that we’ll get to go skiing next season is 90:10 however the degree to which it’ll resemble a normal season is very much up to debate, but then of course we haven’t gone skiing since Brexit.

Overheard locally...
Patient: "I only use homeopathy, don't know why I came"
Vaccinator: "Don't worry, this arrives as a concentrate and we dilute it down for each injection"
Patient: "Oh, that's ok then"
Sometimes, reframing the world at a slightly different angle is all it takes...
