Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Saharan / Sable Orange Snow like living in a Sepia tint

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Once or twice a season we get dust from the Sahara on a Southerly airflow, Sirocco, depositing a fine Orange dust and I seem to recall I've experienced it back in the UK too.

However, today is in another league, looking out of my windows it looks like everything had a sepia tint, or I still have my sunnies on Laughing

Went for a cross-country ski and my van was covered in orange sand, and then I noticed it was still falling out of the sky.

More on the weather meteorological explanation side of things here.

And a piste basher kindly went up the piste in front of us so you can really see the contrast.

And these photos have absolutely no filters!

And it became more intense as I skied further up the valley gaining altitude, and with temps about +4 it was hard going, not too sure what it has done to the base of my skis?

Not too sure if this will be a dangerous weak layer with the snow forecast for later?

Some similar pics coming from St Foy. Very weird! Does the tint give better contrast? Toofy Grin

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

And now some tracks on the Casse de Boeuf piste.

And was just nagging to my guide mate, and he too has never seen it quite like this, over in La Grave he said it's just an Orange mist in the air almost blocking out La Meije.

I asked him if this will be another weak layer and he said it's enough to give up in what's a ludicrously complicated season what with Covid and the snow-pack.

As I was chatting I took the above photo and he very quickly pointed out that in a few days we could well see the inverse, that is Orange tracks in white snow if that makes sense?

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Un-compacted snow melts quicker, eventually leaving the tracks inverted, sticking up (and orange).

It occasionally gets up to the uk too. It’s noticeable as a red dust on cars.

I have seen saharan sand, but I don't recall it that dense. Has it caused breathing problems when it's on the wind?

Mrs U and I found it decidedly unpleasant! Very dark at times.

Skiing in Switzerland yesterday was a bit surreal in the distance from the Mountain top.no idea what it was at the time. Thought the aliens were coming.

Et voila....

We had this back in 2015 at Les Deux Alpes. It was really weird. Also, the yellow snow was wetter than the white and a little more sticky so you would almost lose speed quite quickly. It made skiing very tricky!
