Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Insurance question sorry..

This is probably something I should of asked before visiting Ischgl, Val Disere & Bansko. But what type of insurance do you guys take out for your ski trips?
I have insurance with Halifax Ultimate Reward which covers winter sports but doesn’t go into great detail. I don’t have a EHIC card neither I lost it a long time ago.

This next trip to Austria in March is slightly different as I’m taking my father who has only skiid once back in high school and he’s now almost 60 (my insurance covers family apparently). And I am due to get married 4 weeks after this trip.

Would you guys suggest taking further insurance out and if so what kind? We’re from the UK, Wales if that makes any difference.

Thank you.

I can't give a comprehensive answer but I can tell you that the lost EHIC will be irrelevant unless something wholly unexpected is agreed prior to 1/1/21.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

I would check what insurance covers family means quite closely, best to just ring up your insurance company? Ours covers our own family but that would only be our immediate family not eg my parents.
Agree the EHIc won’t matter although they are very easy to apply for.
Of course, your insurance will be highly unlikely to cover any trip if FCDO advice is still against all but essential travel to Austria in March. In which case you could get a specialist cover that will or hopefully have some cover for cancellation depending on booking terms and insurance terms.

I would be surprised if your insurance covered your Father. Family is usually defined as dependents (spouse/children).

There are many threads on the forum regarding insurance -- do a search....

You need to read your policy document to check what it does and doesn't cover. we cant do it for you. If the policy is not clear then clarify it by a direct question to the insurer. Record the repky if its by telephone.

Then assess what else you want to cover and the risk involved , then get quotes to see if its worth covering.

When you get to the second para above come back and ask where you can get the quotes for the additional cover from. Then you will get some useful answers.

But for the first part as an example I have Nationwide flexiplus, it covers a decent amount of winter sports risk for the family but parents are not covered but you can add them on for a fee for particular trips.

@nba2005uk, I had a brief look at the policy document below

key points:

1. the policy does not appear to cover your father.
2. the policy will not cover you for any claim if you travel to somewhere that the FCDO advises against. It currently advises against "all but essential travel" to Austria.
3. it isn't clear what would happen with the Halifax policy if you bust yourself up so badly that it caused you to delay your wedding.

On point #1 your father likely needs his own cover, irrespective of point #2. If Austria is still on the "all but essential travel list" then all going on the trip need specialist cover. You might also want to talk to your insurer about underwriting the risks associated with #3.

Some providers, like staysure will insure even if the FCDO advises against travel. This isn't an endorsement as I have not used them.

Thanks for your replies.

I guess I was wondering if most people take out any specialist cover. Staysure looks good, do I need to add winter sports? (its 3x the price). My main worry is medical expenses whilst in the country, a colleague of mine had to pay around £7000 for his daughter to be helicoptered away in France.

I suppose I will speak to my current provider about my own cover but I’d like to recommend somewhere for my father.

Thanks all.

Join the UK version of the Austrian Alpine Club for under £50. Its insurance covers outdoor sports, off piste, rescue etc for much of the world (excludes Arctic, Antarctic and above 6000m).
