Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

I have, the gondola car park is huge. It really doesn't make much sense to drive to Pila.

There is also a huge supermarket next door to the gondola.

Gondola from the town is the easiest way, as others have said Car Park is huge so no issues with parking. Get your shopping on the way back at the supermarket on the way back, made me chuckle to see so many people in the supermarket wearing salopettes/ski attire..

Yep,and rent a locker to keep you skis and boots at the gondola station and you can gradually clip up your boots on the lift

@Rob Mackley, +1

Also, you might have trouble finding a parking space but not if you're staying within walking distance. Wink

@Rob Mackley, would I not be better to just keep them in my van or are the lockers at the mid station?
Anyone done any off piste in Pila?

After two four day trips at the British schools champs fully recommend staying in Aosta , great restaurants , bars and shops in the town rather than a somewhat rather uninteresting Pila . Most hotels are a 10 min walk to the gondola best done in trainers before changing into boots kept in lockers at the gondola station . And here is a delightful place to stay http://www.lerevecharmant.com/en/.

Much more to do in Aosta at night. Pila is beautiful but much quieter. And the skiing is amazing.

@Mother hucker, for the top lifts no , however with a hike there might might be more to find in Pila with a guide , I don’t really know . However if the guide is Aosta based there are quite a few unknown resorts around the area which might have some hidden treasures . Go on the main Aosta tourist site for the resorts list . There is aways off piste to be found of the beaten track . For example this http://www.rhemesturismo.it/en/

@Rob Mackley, exactly and it doesn't get tracked out within hours. In fact it can be several days and still untouched in some family based resorts with a little effort

@Mother hucker, we have driven to Aosta from Courmayuer a couple of times to ski Pila, the main car park does fill up by 9-30 ish, but the supermarket next to the gondola has both a covered and open air car park, we used the open air section this year, no issues and it was free. If your staying in Aosta I’d walk if not too far, a nice warm up and warm down each day.

I like the idea of an unencumbered walk in comfortable footwear at the beginning and end of the ski day.

@geoffknight, what time of year do you go out there? I'm limited with school kids we only go at Xmas and New year, feb half term and Easter 2 weeks. I was thinking Pila for a future Feb half term. Im not sure if want 2 weeks in such a small resort

@Mother hucker, if you're in touring boots then, on the piste map, there are three routes marked which go way up into the mountains behind:

http://www.pilaski.co.uk/images/Map/Pila-Piste-Map.jpg

We never got chance but they are on our to-do list. Plenty of off-piste action inside the resort too. This is soon after the magic carpet. Go straight on just as the piste turns right (#27 on the map above).

Yes indeedy! And I was only as far from the piste as I was from Mrs A too.

But last time we went down there it had been side-slipped from top to bottom by some snowboarder who left a bloody great furrow right down the middle Evil or Very Mad

There are many similar opportunities if you keep your eyes peeled - although that was, perhaps, my favourite.

@Mother hucker, we’re there Feb half term, sons now not wanting to the ski school so the last two years we’ve done 3 days in La Thuile, 1 in Pila and the rest in Courmayuer where we stay, all done independently, fly to Milan, hire car and a SC apt. We get the Aosta pass which gives access to the whole valley without day restrictions etc, on the day we weren’t to Pila this year, Courmayuer and La Thuile were closed due to a white out. Pila isn’t huge but if you avoid the central spine it doesn’t get too busy and good value.
