That is sad news.
Do you know if it was it pushed over the edge by CV, or was it struggling?
Big help announced by Chancellor just now.

I heard rumours a couple of weeks ago so IMO nothing to do with CV. Probably more to do with a poor season in the Alps and a few consecutive dire seasons in Scotland. Add in super aggressive targetted marketing in to the UK by EU based online retailers (often posing as UK companies ) with no control from the manufacturers and that'd probably do it.
I believe that the Freeze name & assets have been purchased by Absolute Snow.

Shame, I have got several things online from there as I am not local and they always were competitive price wise I thought (perhaps too competitive...)

Perhaps they sold too much stuff at too punchy a price without enough at full margin to cover their premises etc. You can do it as a discounter but it generally means playing a slightly different business model.

What a shame, I could never work out how they could do the postage to far flung places (like where I live) for so little or free, especially things like skis, which normally cost huge amounts.
Hopefully all the UK government money for wages and VAT holidays, rates etc will assist others.......

Sad news. I remember the original Freeze shop in Bruntsfield / Edinburgh. Twenty years ago now. Nice guys : opened store just as twin tips were taking off. They seemed to have done well moving online and out to the warehouse at Gyle : however heard they had to keep margins tight to compete with Conrad etc

The curse of being a DPS dealer strikes again:
47 Degrees - DPS dealer - Closed
Edge & Wax - DPS dealer - Closed
Freeze Pro Shop - DPS dealer - Closed
Based on this pattern, watch either Absolute Snow or Ellis Brigham.

The trouble is that, in modern times, being what might be a traditionally referred to as a 'good retailer'.
The British public are ever in search of the impossible triangle - Good, Cheap, Fast.
Sadly things like Amazon have made Good/Cheap/Fast seem plausible.
People have got used to getting their purchasing information from the internet - reviews, user feedback, etc. Then searching online to find the cheapest option. People by and large don't even see the flaws in that. The objective is cheap. And preferably next day.
Knowledgeable staff are more expensive than computers. Good retail locations are more expensive than warehouses in outer nowhere. Do your 'research' online and buy online and I can sell you your kit from my self storage unit in a crappy industrial estate somewhere oop-north for twenty quid cheaper than the high street and make more profit too.
And the worst thing is I just can't really see a solution. Even our sH favourite service companies - The Piste Office, Solutions 4 Feet, etc - will have customers who walk in the shop, take the advice of the knowledgeable staff - and then buy it off Glisshop for a hundred quid less. And they don't even see the flaw in that. It's their right. It's the savvy, moneysavingexpert sensible way of working. Why wouldn't you? They fail to see the possibility of all the knowledgeable staff and high street store fronts closing, leaving you with nowhere to sample the gear at all. That's tomorrow's problem and tomorrow's problem is not today's concern.

Yep. Big problem. I sometimes wonder whether it would be possible to ask people to pay a small fee to enter the shop and/or to try something on, which could be refunded if anything is purchased. It wouldn't work for big department stores, but it might work better for specialist retailers like ski and bike shops. The problem is that it's a big risk, which may have terminal consequences if it doesn't work out.

I see your point but I'd feel uncomfortable at such a policy. I don't like being put on the spot where I have to buy something. I could pay the money and completely intend to make a purchase. But if none of the gear is quite right for me, I don't want to feel like I have to pay to say no. That sucks. As an example - I like watches a lot. I can lose an hour in a watch shop easily. I can pay thousands for a watch if need be - the budget is there. But it has to be 'just right'' and the criteria for what works for me is non-exact. But I wouldn't want to be deterred from walking into a watch shop on the premise that if I don't find something 'just right', I'll need to pay for the privilege.
I think part of it is education. People just don't see supporting the shop's income as a consumer problem. The consumer's job is to get the product they want for the price they want to pay, it is the retailers responsibility to meet that price somehow. I've been in an apartment with spyderjon with people who've brought back a pair of skis after trying them out all day at the EOSB, only to say - to his face - 'thanks for letting me ride these all day, but I'll buy a pair from Glisshop where they're cheaper' - with no regard at all for the fact that Jon's paid to get these skis in, mount them, put them in his car, drive them halfway across Europe etc to put them on a snowHead's feet! Maybe if people really understood what they were paying for, they might change.
But really I think we're going to have to go backwards to go forwards. Only when it become impossible to try before you buy - because the model is simply not sustainable - will people then look for paid options for better customer service and options will reappear.

This of course also one of the main reasons all the Ski Shows are no more. So many people will never know how great they used to be, especially for your pre-season fix.

Happens at a running shop near me: you are welcome to have shoes fitted for a price which is then refunded/discounted from the price of a pair of shoes acquired from them. Very reasonable.
Ski Bartlett charge £50 to fit boots bought form elsewhere, however after the p iss around I had getting boots fitted last year it would've been the same price to pay market rates in the shop than to but several sizes and pay to return them to Sport Conrad etc.

That was my experience with Ski Bartlett. Essentally they have a boot fitting charge of £50. If you purchase a pair of boots from them then that cost is refunded off the cost of the boots. I'm not sure what happens if they don't have any boots that fit you (although given the number they had when I was there that seems unlikely!) however they may not charge. If you bring your own for them to fit then it costs £50 which doesn't seem too bad but as you say, may make the cost of their boots incl fitting similar.
