Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Mountains with cable car access from the valley

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Can anyone suggest mountains where you can access the summit from the valley during the summer months. I'm thinking of stuff like the Bastille in Grenoble or the cable car at Stresa that goes to Mottarone: http://www.stresa-mottarone.it/
Turin has a funicular railway to the Superga but the main road is a bit rough in places and busy.

Basically I'm looking for places with good tarmac road access from the base to the summit of the cable car / funiculaire.

I can't think of anything much in the French Alps, there are loads of projects but nothing concrete.

OK, if you're really thinking of the road + cable-car combo, then Les Arcs is still a pretty good example. Funi from Bourg Saint Maurice to Arc 1600 (very good road), 800m ish of vert. Possible to continue to Arc 2000 and Col de la Chal via both lifts and road (ish).

@davidof, does it have to be a cable-car will a big bubble suffice?

Briancon operates in the Summer I think and I know the Chantemerle big gondola does, and then you can transfer to the cable car at Serre Ratier which takes you to the top.

Samnaun, Siviez, Kaprun, St Anton, Lech, Val D'Isere, Kitzbuhel, Cham.....in fact loads do don't they? Many you change at mid station but they mostly go to the summit, that's kind of the point.

Morillon , village to 1100 les Esserts.

Has main access road, plus much quieter "local" road approaching other side of village.

Also les Gets gondola, neither reaching peak but first stages of mountain.

Barage d'emosson in France/Swizterland. Mind you, it's a cable car, a mini train, and a funicular, so you might rather ride down. It was on the TdF route a couple of years ago.

It's not the summit of the mountain, but it's a long way up. About 1000m of ascent, on a really good road.

Not bad but like Venosc the road is a long way around. I did walk up a trail practically under the cable car once.

La Thuile (Italy) is a good option too. Chairlifts, but you can take them downhill.

There's a decent tarmac road which branches off from the main Petit Saint Bernard climb and cuts right through the ski area, close to the summer chairlifts.

One morning a week in the summer the 21 bends up to Alped'Huez are closed to traffic to allow bikes, walkers, roller skiers etc. ?

Park at OZ station early in the morning, catch a bus to Bourg d'Oisans, up the traffic free 21 bends to ADH and then continue up the tarmac road towards the middle troncon, you have the last 500m as gravel so would have to carry your roller skis, catch the poutran lift back down to OZ. Vertical would be about 1400m ? Distance 15km ?

The bus might work better with Vaujany in which case you would have to take the Alpette on from OZ and then back down to Vaujany on the cable car.

Having said that I have seen roller skiers ascending the bends when the road is open Shocked

+1 for the Vertic'Alp d'Emosson https://verticalp-emosson.ch/en/

This funicular/open train/mini-funicular trip is up from Finhault near the Swiss/French border, on the road from Martigny to Chamonix.

Below is a photo' of the final leg in the mini-funic', after you've taken the incredibly steep (86% incline) funicular up from the valley at Finhault, then the open-top petit train 'round the mountain. You can drive up to the barrage car park/café as well, but you'd miss a truly spectacular set of rides.

On the day we went, the Mt.Blanc Massif in the centre distance was shrouded in cloud. From the barrage, there is a hike (straight ahead in the picture below) over to the Samoëns valley, which takes you past an outcrop of dinosaur footprints.

But you'd have to be a serious hiker to do the crossing all the way to Sixt and the Samoëns valley - my recollection is that it's close to 5-6 hours for someone fit. And obviously driving from Finhault to Sixt take a fair while if you were being met.

Actually, the most unnerving bit is the ride down in the pivoting mini-funic' - the rails at the bottom just seem to end abruptly in mid-air over a precipice, without any apparent buffers! Great fun.

I think he's training for the winter, when he sparks a new craze of skinning up and taking a gondola or cable car down.

If planned correctly, we could cover the 3 Valleys in a day, without doing any downhill skiing. wink Toofy Grin

It's already a thing... Not uncommon to see some lycra warrior walking onto the Saulire cable car (at the top) clutching their matchsticks...

Good idea. I sometimes got my OH to drive me down to the Beaufort Valley then walked up to 1550m - not a heroic climb, but I hate going downhill on foot.

We once saw two blokes hauling themselves onto a viewing platform at the top of the Aiguille de Midi. Clanking with all the gear. We were duly impressed. When they tried to get the cable car down - with no tickets - they were allowed to board but were met at the bottom and escorted to buy tickets. Laughing

I cycled over the col de la Loze just before winter, now that is a steep climb on the Meribel side and it will be great to see if the TdF goes over. Can you get down to Meribel? there is a cable car at the col but I couldn't see where it came from. Access to the col from Courchevel looks less than straightforward in summer, I think the Chenus is not too far. The Saulire must be after the steep ramp I filmed in this video.

Nice, I've cycled up in spring to the dam with my skis. The road was shut for some reason. It is very hard going. I then toured to some summit beyond the dam.

Yes - we've used a Swiss cable car for descent without tickets. The guard had no problems allowing us on but we were escorted to the ticket office at the bottom.
