Poster: A snowHead
|
My plan to hit Kitzbühel, Dolomites, Serfaus and Lech in that order is now under review due to my concerns about getting stuck or labelled as some type of CV19 carrier from the Dolomites piece of the trip (the other pieces are pretty fixed unless things get totally weird). I'm going to wait and see what FIS does about the Cortina WC races that I hoped to attend; they are making an announcement on March 6; my departure is the 11th. Meanwhile, it seems prudent to have a Plan B and that it should be one that keeps me in Austria. Zillertal, Saalbach, Obergurgl would seem to make sense. Maybe leaning toward Zillertal due to higher elevation. Ironically, I have a reservation in Lanersbach in June, but that trip is also under review as well. I might be able to stay late at Kitz and arrive early at Serfaus, but I'd prefer something new if I have to switch. Thoughts please/thanks.

@Scooter in Seattle, Are you going to have a rental car for your trip or rely on public transport? Either way the Zillertal is a good option, but if you want another option the Ski Amade region east of Salzburg is very good. I know several snowheads based out there and they say the snow conditions at the moment are excellent. If you should decide to go there I can highly recommend staying at fellow snowhead flangesax's place in Radstadt: https://www.austrian-adventures.com/

@wnhall - I'm thinking of doing the exact same thing for Easter - would you head for Mayrhofen in Zillertal for its height or are there other villages to consider

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Yea check dates as snow bombing is sometime over Easter ,we are staying in mayrhoffen , zell am ziller is worth a visit , the glacier is nearby too so skiing isn’t likely to be affected by the weather so much . I went to snow bombing and the conditions weren’t bad to be fair

@Scooter in Seattle, I would be inclined towards the Zillertal simply because of the height. There are various reports around from the Kitzbühel area suggesting that the lower slopes really are fairly slushy / icy / non existent. I know there is a reasonable amount of snow due in the near future but the temperatures are not likely to be that cold and my experience is that March snow really doesnt do much for the lower slopes in the Tirol / Salzburgerland. Most of the skiing in the Zillertal is above the tree line which is often the place to be in March.

Music festival in Mayrhofen 13th-18th April.
Won't really notice it much on the slopes but there is some stuff going on.
Can be a bit busier/noisier in town, potential for festival goers returning noisily to hotel rooms etc.
Pick a hotel on the outskirts of town and you may hardly notice it, or join in and enjoy it if that's your thing.

@Alastair Pink, yes I'll have a car and thanks to you and @munich_irish for the suggestions. If I have to ditch my Italy piece, I'll feel bad for my innkeeper, who doesn't charge me a deposit since I've stayed there before. Do I owe him something other than coming back next year?

@Scooter in Seattle, I'd suggest that if you reassure him that you'll be back next year that should be some recompense, maybe bring him a gift next time as a thank you....

You know it makes sense.

@Scooter in Seattle, if you have the car then the valley is perfect for exploring the different resorts/areas.
