Poster: A snowHead
|
Hi all.
We’re off to the Zillertal in a couple of weeks for a long weekend. First time skiing since our daughter has been around, she’s now 15 months and toddling around. We’re taking the grandparents who are happy to keep our daughter amused while we get some skiing in, but I was hoping for some ideas for things for them to do with her?
We’re staying in fugen, close to the train station, so they’ll probably do a day in Innsbruck, spend a morning or two swimming in fugen...any other child friendly activities people have done in the Zillertal?
Cheers
Matthew

There is a great swimming pool complex in Fugen complete with toddler pool wave pools etc. We normally stay in Kaltenbach and drive to it most evenings. From memory it is open from 11am til 10pm. If you are staying close to the lifts it is at least a 15 min walk though.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

@jellemr, Apologies only read your message properly now. You already mentioned that you were going swimming. It is only a 10 min walk from the train station with no uphill.

Thanks - we’ve been there before and will definitely use it. Just wondered if anyone had any other ideas for things to keep them all entertained.

At that age, they'll often enjoy playing in the snow. A bucket or washing up bowl half full of snow, with a few plastic containers and a little beach spade might go down well. A little toboggan too - not just to ride in, but to pull a dolly around on. They can usually be hired cheaply. Make sure she has a warm all in one suit and several pairs of easy mittens. And take some favourite indoors activities. At that age they'll mostly do the same things in the Zillertal as they do at home!

@jellemr, the big dairy on the outskirts of Mayrhofen was a hit with my children. You can taste the yogurt and cheese as you go around and there's a farm with cows and goats and a nice play area, some of which is under cover.
The restaurant at the top station of the Ahornbahn in Mayrhofen is a nice place to meet for lunch and very accessible for pedestrians. I believe there's also a shiny new restaurant at the top of the Hochzillertalbahn but haven't tried that one myself.

@pam w, good advise, thanks.
@LittleRos, good idea, a trip to see the cows would be perfect for her . We are planning on probably doing mostly ski mornings, and then family activities in the afternoons most days.

Have a look at Happy Hopp in Vomp (near Schwaz). It's an indoor soft play place. I'm not sure how much there is there for toddlers, although there's a price from 2yrs old so presumably there's something suitable for that age group inside.

Also, tobogganing from the top station at Spieljoch to the middle station. You can rent toboggans at the top.
The restaurant (Mountain View) at the top of the gondola in Hochzillertal is nice, with good food.
There's also a winter walking path from there to the Wimbach Express gondola which takes you to Albergo restaurant - lovely to visit on a nice day. Not really a toddler activity but nice for the grandparents if you all want to meet for lunch on the mountain.

@SaraJ, good idea re the walking path - is that the green dotted line on the piste map??
How extreme is the toboggan run on the Speioljoch? I'd love to take our daughter, but want to make sure it's not too crazy!!

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

@jellemr, Hmm... I don't have a paper piste map to hand and looking on the Hochzillertal website at the interactive map the walking path looks like a yellow dotted line. The path goes from the top of the Hochzillertal gondolas (the two that come up from the car park) down the side of the beginner slope to Marendalm then further to the Wimbach Express.
The first few zig zags of the Spieljoch toboggan track are quite exciting, after that it's a lovely trundle through the forest. It's 6kms in total and the steeper zig zags at the beginning are about 500m altogether. If you ski at Spieljoch before you plan a tobogganing trip you'll be able to see the first section and can then decide if you think it will be too hair-raising, or not.

You know it makes sense.

For such a tiny person a toboggan run about 40 metres long is probably optimal!
