Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Late Spring Zell Am See backup plan?

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
I'm taking the family skiing at Zell Am See the 2nd week of April as part of our spring break trip, but I'm concerned about there being little/no snow since Schmitten is closing April 13th. We're going to be traveling by train, so it would be a pain to make backup hotel reservations in a bunch of other towns as insurance. So my question is are there other resorts/pistes that we could get to by bus, etc. that are close enough to Zell Am See that we could get there easily if Schmitten and the others right next to town have crappy snow? It's my first time in that area, and first time skiing Europe with the fam, so I'm a noob at this place. Thanks.

@thafool, I suspect you might be right to be concerned about the amount of skiing in Zell mid April however just down the road is the glacier at Kaprun, https://www.kitzsteinhorn.at/en. There are buses from Zell to the glacier area. That should sort your backup plan Very Happy

Definitely.
The Kitzsteinhorn glacier above Kaprun is a five minute bus ride from Zell and is on the same lift pass. Friends went there last April and had a good time.

As above, you will probably need to hop on a skibus from Zell am See to Kaprun and hit up their glacier (what's left of it).

You're looking at ~1hr of total travel there and back.

Excellent! Thanks all for your input. I had seen that Kaprun had glacier skiing, but I've always had a car when skiing so I wasn't sure how big of pain it was to get around without one. And if the snow is crappy I guess we'll just have to find the bar at one of the bazillion ski huts. Either way Daddy wins. Twisted Evil

Welcome @thafool to the forum,
You never know with snow .. we could still have an almighty dump and freeze,
Full marks for going by train, I just came back by train last Saturday.
Which route are you going?
We came in on the EC163 from Worgl and booked seat in the panorama car, brilliant.

The 660 bus runs from Zell to Kaprun every half hour.
If the snow is good on the Maiskogel make sure you come back from the glacier on the 3km long lift, I didn't do it but my daughter says its brill.
Then visit the "Ranch Alm" up in the Maiskogel the family will love it.
