Poster: A snowHead
|
Fellow Snowheads - I'm planning on taking the train from Saltzburg to Brunico in a few weeks' time and quite fancy stopping off at one or two of the resorts that the train line passes through e.g. Sillian, Lienz, Spittal-an-der-Drau or Mallnitz.
Wondered if anyone's been to any of these and can provide recommendations?
Ideally, I'd prefer places where the skiing and hotels are fairly near the railway station (or where there's a frequent shuttle bus between the two).
Any info greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Thanks Luigi, that's great. Just what I was after.
I've used the same line for Perca which has a brilliantly integrated gondola and railway station (with ski hire) and this looks like the same kinda thing.

that looks like a rather conveniently located train station platform
was trying to sort out trains to brunico, and was interested to see that bahn.de wants to route me via Salzburg and Lienz rather than Innsbruck and Brenner
and I'm guessing some/all of those pustertal tiny ski villages are also on the dolomiti superski pass, assuming that's the intended destination

The new James Bond film, "Spectre", is being filmed in Obertilliach in January, I believe, although I don't know exactly when or what that might involve. Maybe you could get a job as an extra

We [currently] live near Nassfeld and our season ski pass covers over 30 resorts in the Carinthia and Ost Tirol area. Sillian is a great little resort. Not much snow this year but we had a great few hours there the other week. We absolutely love Lienz, which is actually two ski areas, one on each side of the town. Goldeck above Spittal also good for a day or two. There is also Dreiecke (Arnoldstein) , Gerlitzen just outside of Villach and loads of other small areas.
Next week we are heading to Badkleinkirchen area for a few days.

@Mike Pow, I can't help (you've already found the regional lift pass) but this area's on my wishlist. Hope it all goes well!

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

I think Sillian will be connected by lifts / pistes to the 3 Zinnen Dolomites part of the Dolomiti Superski region sometime in the next couple of years.

I believe that's the plan, and I've sort of been waiting for that to happen before organising a trip. However even with the connecting lift, it may be more convenient to use the train. Time will tell.

Considering heading to this area 14-21 March 2020.

I've skied Kals-Matrei & at the Mölltaler Gletscher. It's around 1 hr from Lienz to the Mölltaler Gletscher.
If it were me, based on the warm & sunny weather forecast I'd base myself near the Möltaler glacier as the lower resorts are likely to suffer and the best conditions will be up on the glacier.
Plus with this virus that is going around I'd not want to be too close to Italy.
