Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Was tempted to download. Saw it was 1 hr 15 mins. Backed away. What is it with amateur podcasters that makes them produce such longwinded stuff. 30-45 mins is the sweetspot. Doesn't need to turnoff potential listeners before they've tried it.

1hr 15 is perfect for me as that's the typical drive to Hemel from home, but I do appreciate that a lot of amateur stuff (not just podcasts) is crying out for a good editor.

I think both episodes have been excellent - two eloquent guests who clearly have a passion for teaching.

As a mere L1 one thing that struck me this week was the discussion around client-led teaching. Question for other instructors - how many clients come to a lesson with a clear development need identified or is it still a case of 'this is how I ski, make me better'?

In my experience very few clients identify a clear development need beyond ambitions like "I want to ski bumps / learn to carve / ski powder" and mostly it's a case that they want to improve all round without a specific goal in mind. But if you work with them over a period of time the client might develop a clearer idea of what they want want to change or improve in their skiing, something which can develop as they improve their own understanding of ski technique.

Good to hear. Dave, who runs the Instructor podcast, regularly appears on The Ski Podcast just in smaller segments, for those more interested in technique than the nuances of the world of instructing

Just finished listening to the Jaz Lamb interview. Really good to hear an honest and open discussion about BASI and instructing, recognising that there are things it could do better, while still being positive about what it does.

There's plenty I'd improve about it - the audio quality and levels being one - but it was interesting enough that I could (just about) ignore that. There's also I think good potential for a drinking game based around how many times the phrase "back in the day" crops up.

Thanks for posting the links - I have enjoyed these including the last one, sound wasn't too bad on my device. Pleased the interview addressed the cross under /aeroplane wings style prevalent in antipodean and East Asian demonstration skiing clips.

I noticed this week's had some weirdo on it so have downloaded for tonight's drive.

Edit - weirdo was quite interesting and dare I say it probably better at the podcasting lark than the host, who still needs to learn to edit and self reference a bit less to make his questions a bit less rambling.

I think there's a really good and interesting podcast in there generally and if could be focused into 45 mins could have a wider audience outside ski instructors themselves.

Worth listening to the Powell Movement to see how a bit more seasoned broadcaster keeps things moving with the one person interview format in skiing

@Dave of the Marmottes, will pass on your comments, I agree that 1 20 is too long and 45 to an hour would hold attention better, the intro, background and how we met bit was pretty long imv.... but... it is such a specialised niche subject perhaps the audience doesn't mind. We didn't set a list of questions, he mentioned a few broad topics prior to taping and it was pretty free flow.. We ended up chatting about big vs short skiers and learning as an adult randomly. I had two topics that were more teaching related but never got there.. Maybe next season Smile

I decided to persevere and also found the weirdo both interesting and lucid, including in the 'boring' (not boring for me) legal bits. Chapeau. It would have been really good - and not even too long - if the questions had been that bit more focussed.

Congratulations, too, to the said weirdo for not succumbing, despite 29 years in Essex, to the hideous estuary accent which seems to be ubiquitous amongst British skiers, both teachers and punters.(Hemel often sounds like an outpost of one of those reality TV programmes. Shocked )

@Dave of the Marmottes, Had a look at the Powell one and couldn't stand the yee hah American enthusiasm so binned it swiftly.
They are all 60 -90 minutes long so not sure how any different to Dave's efforts, I would prefer to commit suicide than listening to all that Bro talk for so long... Laughing

@skimottaret, but you are them (albeit filtered through decades of Essex) wink

Fair point on the length, I don't listen to them all but just the ones where they have someone I might find interesting. I listened to the Cody Townsend one on a drive Friday and would have said it was around an hour rather than the apparent 82 mins. My point was more in the pacing - it didn't feel long and was professionally edited enough to put together 2 interviews done at separate times into a coherent whole that told the story of his childhood, early years in skiing, move into freeride, earning money from it, setting up his own business, filming then moving away from that to do his own project. I only cited it because it is a similar one on one format in the same industry. Of course Cody as one of the most high profile skiers on the planet has slightly more stardusty tales to tell than any of Dave's interviewees.

Now it's a bit unfair because besides his background as a team manager at K2, Mike Powell has years on the mic as hype man , commentator at US ski events so it's probably best to consider him a professional broadcaster but if you can get beyond the bro-fest and the being stoked at everything I think it might be worth Dave looking at the format and the discipline to improve his podcast.

I consume a lot of podcasts and length is usually the make or break on me sampling a new one. It's just a perspective that may be relevant if Dave has any desire to reach a wider audience beyond mates and clients.

@Dave of the Marmottes, I am pretty new to podcasts and dont have much to reference to but I would imagine a lot could be learned by newbie amateurs by listening to a few more professionally produced ones. Will advise Dave B...

One that crosses over is the ski racer podcast that Ed Drake did this past season. I would guess Ed was honing his skills for broadcasting but it was very professionally done by a relative newbie. worth checking out...

@skimottaret, One other thought is that he need not necessarily shorten the individual input interviews but perhaps have a few topics on standard areas he addresses with each and then banks that material for additional podcasts e.g. he could run one on perspectives on teaching never evers, differences between adult and kids, race coaching etc. Might take a bit more editorial ruthlessness but its a way of extending his series and making individual episodes punchier.

Hello everyone, it’s Dave from the Ski Instructor Podcast here.

Thank you for your constructive feedback. I’ve had so many people get in touch about what I’ve decided to do, it’s really nice to hear that people love it.

I thought I’d just clarify a couple of things which I realized that I haven’t yet mentioned on the podcast.

I started this because after I finished my Full cert Swiss, I kind of fell off a cliff as far as learning and meeting people more knowledgeable than me was concerned.

I decided to start a podcast because I wasn’t hearing the sort of content that I wanted to hear but really it’s for my own amusement/pleasure/learning opportunity. I record and publish it because I figured there might be a demand for it but I’m not trying to raise my profile or anything or monetize it. It’s purely for me to learn from people more experienced than me and I’d be doing it even if I wasn’t recording it. In a sense the listener is just along for the ride, take it or leave it.

I deliberately chose a long format as I’ve also listened to hype man Powell Movement podcast and I can’t stand it, there is no depth in that sort of time frame. A lot of my journées between resorts out here are long and do take up 1.5hrs. I don’t set a time limit on my interviews and the majority of them aren’t edited so you get the full conversation and so the conversation can go where it naturally wants to go. It’s a niche topic and you know how instructors like to talk.

Hopefully the sound quality is better in recent episodes, especially the ones over the phone, I’ve worked out how to make that louder now.

Maybe this clarifies a few things, happy skiing everyone wherever you are.
Dave

@Dave SnowPros, thanks Dave. That clarifies the intent and that it's not really for punters no matter how interested in skiing they are. Which is fine - if its not intended to be a pro podcast then it doesn't need to sound like one.

I have to say, as a ‘pro’ that I really dislike that term punters. It’s not them and us, we’re all up there trying to enjoy the snow and ski the best we can, regardless of the level. I’ve just taken up the guitar and it’s frustrating being crap at it. I’m learning a lot about what it’s like to be one of our clients.

I don’t mind who listens to the pod, if they find it interesting then that’s great. I’m just trying to learn and if people can be a part of that then that’s cool.

P.s. off to Aosta soon for the next one Smile
