TELEGRAPH SKI & SNOWBOARD FESTIVAL is no more according to Planet ski
Quote: |
It’s the end of an era as Telegraph Events pulls the plug on the show and also stops publishing the magazine.
The Ski Show, as many people still call it, has been an autumn institution for decades for UK skiers and snowboarders.
However poor ticket sales and a reduction in exhibitors has meant it is no more.
“The Telegraph has taken the decision to cancel the event following a review of its strategy,” said a message to some exhibitors from Jeff Blackmore, the Senior Sales Executive at Telegraph Events.
“In addition, the print magazine will also cease to be published due to our readers preferring to consume content online instead.”
“Thank you for the support that you've provided the festival over the years.”
It hardly comes as a bombshell as many had been predicting its demise for some time.
However, with the loss of the Birmingham, Manchester and Glasgow shows in recent years there is now no major snowsports show in the UK. |

I remember back in the day the ski show was an epic social event. Changed days.

An opportunity for SnowHeads to fill the gap and make some dollar.
Set up a small or medium show at a low-cost location.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Very much end of an era
Very happy to have been part of it as an exhibitor and a customer.
Always had my money's worth.

It was dying on its back bottom even before the nutso decision to move to Battersea and a location not readily accessible by tube. Had a free ticket one year and still didn't bother due to location. The latter shows at Earls Court had the vibe of a good get together for industry mates rather than benefit for the paying punters.

I first went when it was staged at the Royal Horticultural Hall in Victoria (?); roundabout 1974/75, I think. Sad it has gone....

It's a shame and it's not great news. To be vibrant, any activity needs to be visible - look at cycling, watersports, photography. All have healthy events, newstand and online. The lovely slow media that is a magazine underwrites the infostream of online and the touchyfeeliness (less of that at the moment, if you please) of events and the activity itself.

I went a couple of times and quite enjoyed it primarily as I wanted to buy kit and being so many vendors under a single roof provided lots of choice.
I thought it was too expensive for entry particularly for a family of 4 so stopped going quite a few years back. The entry should have been half the price (that in itself made not have made it viable).

Surely, for you, it means more of the marketing spend might go your way? When things contract like this it's often quite good for the players left in the game.
The show was in a poor venue, Brexit/Coronavirus won't have helped for sure, but its demise could be more to do with wider issues in the Barclay empire: https://www.ft.com/content/592aef74-5955-11ea-abe5-8e03987b7b20

Maybe - the audiences are different so we'd need to open the gates a little wider - a new website is coming with more travel info. And agree re the big picture; I'd heard that specialist ski media wasn't a priority a while back, though online would remain important.

My magazine subscription has been cancelled , only found out yesterday. Always been a good read and sometimes prefer reading a magazine compared to an IPad. I wonder if my Decanter mag might go the same way?

I thought the magazine was pretty poor in recent years; too many rehashes of resort reviews from Where to Ski and Snowboard, for example. Not surprised it has been discontinued.

You know it makes sense.

A shame about the show, I enjoyed taking my daughter along to get her interested in a ski holiday, and it signalled the start of our 'season' i.e. ski show, then some dry slope/snowdome before the actual holiday.
Agree with comments above re. the magazine. Have been a subscriber for many years and this year was the first time I have questioned if I would renew. No decision to take now, but it increasingly felt like just one giant advert.
Sad times - but the world moves on I guess

I went once to a show in Manchester MANY years ago, it wasn't very impressive.
I also stopped buying ski mags when i joined snowHeads.

A victim of the online world we now live in and ski gear being freely available at the likes of Decathlon, Lidl and Aldi.

Don't worry you can still buy jackets heading for the £1k mark at Snow & Rock.
