Hi all, I'm after some advice please,
I have recently invested in a shiny new pair of Fisher RC4s and overlooked the fact that they come with a Gripwalk binding. That in itself isn't the problem, but I have touring boots with a Vibram ISO 9523 sole, and I have just discovered that my old 'alpine' boots are done for and can no longer be used.
I've just tried the touring boot in the Gripwalk binding, it fits, clicks in fine, and will release with a good lateral bump at the front of the boot. So what then, specifically, would make this combination incompatible? Obviously, I don't want to ruin my legs if it turns out that they won't release as designed, but at first glance, at least, it seems that they do

The compatibilities are explained here. The short answer is no, they're not compatible ('Non-GripWalk ISO 9523, WTR and non-standard touring boots may fit into GripWalk bindings, but they will not perform safely or consistently.')

People do this. You may see ski patrollers doing this. That's their call. Personally I'd rather slam my nuts in a car door than ski on that setup.

Sorry. Got slightly carried away. Context here is that major knee or tibia injury would probably end my skiing. I'm very cautious around that.

No worries at all, and fair comment  That'd be my main concern, too. I'm just trying to find some technical information that backs up the advice that's out there, as @JayRo kindly directed me to. The devil is in the detail as they say.

Yeah. Specifically inconsistent release at the toe will increase your risk of spiral tibia fracture way beyond the point where I would be comfortable.

Put some shiny new warden mnc on them, or marker IDs. Be aware of binding delta though. MAybe not any more than in your AT bindings though.

@bit_hehe, I had a similar issue with a new pair of boots. In my case, Atomic make an alpine replacement sole which you can swap out the gripwalks allowing the boots to be used with both older “non-gripwalk” and new “gripwalk” (they’re two different ISO standards, not sure which is which) bindings. This may be an option available to you?

Thanks @Boofont, but as @KenX, the soles I have on my touring boots can’t be swapped unfortunately. They’re ISO 9523, without the anti-friction pad. The vibram soles are great to walk on, but they’re there to stay.
