Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Best resort for a long weekend with kids?

Hi there. Dates have just come out for school inset days next academic year. Yippee, we can take a long weekend in March 2021! Where to go though? Mum, dad and two girls aged 9 and 6 at the time. Everyone capable of skiing a fair chunk of the mountain. But where to go???? I prefer to self book rather than tour op and we might book the girls in for a lesson or two. Ideas? This wont be our only skiing that year, but a cheeky add on.

Megeve would be a good shout. Short transfer, nice town, great slopes. We stayed in this apartment which would be ideal for you. You can get the Alpy bus from Geneva if you don't want a car.

Megeve also has a fantastic leisure/swiming place including outside which we went to a couple of nights.

You'll need the precise dates.

Early-March and everywhere above ~700m will be open.

Late-March and everywhere below ~1800m will be melting fast.

1. Isola 2000 (France)
2. Sauze d'Oulx (Italy)
3. Kitzbuehel (Austria)
4. Megeve (France)

@Farry, Flight times and ease of transfers are the key thing to look at initially, what extra days are you getting on the insets? If it’s a Friday and Monday, that will cross over two weeks accommodation periods, but if your outside of French school holidays you should be able to get a deal for SC, hotels booked direct should OK. Ive done a couple of solo short trips Thursday to Monday to Flaine via GVA, and Monday to Thursday in Kaprun via Salzburg, getting a single room was the hardest bit for me.

Agree with that.

I was going to suggest Les Contamines - similar short drive from GVA (and for a long weekend, the economics of hiring a car are compelling). Les C will likely have better snow than Megeve and you are less likely to get the bad weather that Megeve is particularly good for. Les C is quieter and smaller linked area but not really an issue for 3 days?

Yes, Les Contamines would be OK, though you might need to download by gondola. Another possibilit, with more skiing to go at, is Praz sur Arly, just a few miles further along the valley from Megeve. Less busy, and less expensive (and a lot less up itself) than Megeve. Fast access up the 6 man Cret du Midi chair, with huge free car park at the bottom. Access to the best, and quietest, of the Notre Dame de Bellecombe skiing. Even after the French holidays your choices might be limited to where you can find self catering accommodation for less than the full standard French week. But as @Whitegold says, your timing in the month is important. The first week of March is still French school hols. Second week ideal. Ah - just seen this is 2021!! I'd not think about it until much nearer the time. Nobody in high-demand accommodation will take a long weekend booking for March 2021 at this juncture.

I'm going with the same area but saying St Gervais, cheaper then Megeve but same ski area & easier to get to Les Contamines (you should go for a day at least).
I am assuming your service day is a Monday, then it is very doable. In fact I am doing it this weekend with 5 dads & 5, 12 year olds.
Fly out Friday after school, 1 hour transfer get you into village by 10.30, time for 1 beer. Ski Sat, Sun & Mon until 13.00, quick shower then up to Geneva for 18.00 flight home (don't forget to pick up chocolate for mum this time!!!!!!!). Perfect weekend

From mid march Skiwelt do free kids ski passes and a discount on accomodation booked through the tourist board. You can generally get short stays ok after mid March. We have been in March and there is generally plenty of snow, if a bit soft low down and late in the day, Westendorf is probably the best centre. You are not far from Munich airport with flights everyday of the week. Saalbach Hinterglemm has a similar lift pass deal but the transfer is a bit longer.

It wasn’t bad price wise and was a straightforward drive from Geneva (but careful about trusting the Sat Nav if you get the one we did!).
