Hi, I wonder if anyone can advise...
I just had my first go at tuning the edges of my ski's, they are a pair of Stockli Scale Delta's and have had about 10 days use from new, mainly on piste. What I am unsure about is that the edges do not seem as sharp as when they were factory fresh. The ski previously seemed to have an extra continuous slightly burred edge the full length of the ski which was almost razor sharp to the touch and protruding slightly. My efforts have certainly cleaned up the edges and got rid of minor nicks and irregularities but the overall sharpness seems to have decreased albeit by removing this extra slightly protruding fine razor sharp edge. I am wondering if that was just how they come from the factory? The finger nail test is a bit inconclusive, yes the edge will shave a bit of nail but it's just not that sharp. I don't want to wax until I've got the edge as it should be...
I hope this makes sense to somebody?!

Probably should mentioned I've used side edge tool with file, diamond file and gummy stone, in that order.

What you've done is correct, good job.
The factory tune you descibe was a sh1te job and that hanging burr (as it's called) they came with shouldn't have been there. The problem with a hanging burr is that to many people it's what they expect 'sharp' to feel like and will will do a good job in shaving off your finger nail - but it should not be there and you're lucky the skis were even usable.
The work you've done on the side edge angle is correct, ie remove any stone dings/skiing burrs (with an alu-oxide stone), metal file to create a slight hanging burr, diamond file(s) to polish, remove hanging burr with diamond file &/or gummy. You should be able to shave some nail but the edge it won't be as aggressive to your as if the hanging burr was left on.

@spyderjon, Ah thanks. That was kind of what I suspected but also wondered if I'd gone a bit wrong. Also thought a company like Stockli would provide a decent factory tune but clearly not!

and yet so many people...including several here who were rather vociferous in a previous thread...are perfectly sure that new from yje factory skis are ready to use and should not be tuned.

I always get stuck into mine (and all my mates) new skis as soon as I get my hands on them.
