Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

J is for Jargon

Hi, anyone feel there's too much jargon in ski commentating these days?

@Phatairs, No. Got any examples?

 Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Low in the line, in the back seat
For not skiers perhaps?

@Phatairs, Oh I get it. Are you a skier or a boarder?

I'm a skier - I understand what they are talking about, but I wonder if non 'riders' watching Ski Sunday would. It's the job of the commentator to engage. Also sometimes it's low in the late, sometimes late in the line. F1 too. Examples - 'Delta' and 'Underotate'.

@Phatairs, know what you mean. Overall I think they get balance about right. Be surprised if 90% of regular audience weren't 'riders'. Useful when Bell films himself doing the course first.
Quick 2 or 3 minute introduction to terms they use at the start of each new series might be good? They could chuck in the occasional 'back bottom over apex' or 'went a right pi$$er' I suppose.

@Phatairs, Think thats low in the gate... as in not on the best racing line. Delta is the change in difference between two times, under-rotate is to understeer, or go wider than you planned through a corner.
I suggest you avoid freestyle events, or just enjoy them with the commentary off.

“Under-rotate” often used for locked up a wheel under braking.

Sorry meant 'low in the line'

Just to reiterate I understand the terms, but is it understood by nonriders? Could be 150k+ people

BTW - my understanding of under-rotate is when the brakes lock?? (Coultard)

Just heard a corker on Eurosport -

'Dragging low and late in the delta'

Front brakes, yes - rear brakes and you'll be heading for over-rotation - all brakes and you're on a sledge, but brake lockups are all about how the weight is being transferred across the car, a locked brake is a symptom of an unweighted corner... and we're back in jargon.

'Dragging low and late in the delta'

I *think* thats just gibberish - best leave it as some kind of technical ASMR and just let it wash over you...

I don't think it's gibberish, I think it's jargon

Dragging (his hand/hip?) low and late ( or - wide? of the optimum racing line) in the Delta (turn)

@PeakyB, fair enough

@Phatairs, I think I can work out most of the skiing terms especially when watching but a lot of the boarding terms pass me by. I wonder whether some of the jargon is just invented by commentators to make them sound edgy and original.

@halfhand +1, but my impression is, the commentators are a long way from being alone in this . .
