Ruptured the tendon that attaches my right quad to my right knee so now have a floppy none working right leg. St Pancras station on the steps down to the tube barrier is where it happened

How Awful! Recommend getting a copy of your NHS MRI and taking it to Mr J B for diagnosis, treatment / prognosis.

@davkt, You have my sympathy. This winter has been treacherous. I'm there most mornings and all those stair cases around St P and KX turn into absolute ice rinks given a light coating of cold dew. I have had a couple of big moments myself (although not a big as yours)
I suggest a call to m'learned ambulance chasing friends might be in order as there is definitely something wrong with the spec of the finishes they've used during the recent refurb works

Was the little flight of steps just before the ticket barriers as you head for the Victoria line from St Pancras (sorry St P is the TfL quick reference for it), the ones they sometimes close off in the rush hour. Could be 'interesting' suing TfL as I work for them! Though I guess this count as an accident at work even though I hadn't made it to the office!

Glad you've got a diagnosis so soon, it vital to get that tendon repaired within a few days or it will shrivel up and you won't walk again. Best of luck under the knife and good luck with the rehab. A mate of mine did something similar and made a full recovery over 6 months.

Yep the doc at UCL made it very plain I needed to get to Derby Hospital tomorrow no excuses. One of the BTP community officers was chatting to me at St P on the way home after coming over to see if I needed any help, said he had done exactly the same about 18 months ago, he said it was about 7 or 8 months to be about 80% right, which for him was enough to start running again, and around a year to be close to 100%

OK back home again now but back to hospital first thing in the morning to have my knee put back together once the swelling has gone down a bit. Health insurance seems happy with the idea of me having the surgery on the NHS then them picking up things in the recovery so fingers crossed I can swing it to go see JB and his colleagues as the local physio service here is very overstretched and it is blind luck as to if you get one who understands getting things back to sports fitness or is just interested in making sure basic mobility is OK.

oh bad luck. On the bright side the recovery, although lengthy, and hard work, should be a complete one.

@Frosty the Snowman, Yep just one of those things, just bad luck I went down that particular bit of the steps and fell the way I did having slipped. And on the bright side although been in the office is good from the social side of things I have the sort of job where about 99% can be done anywhere with a laptop and net connection so won't end up bored out of my brain watching daytime telly during the enforced immobility!

Tore off my biceps tendon 3 years ago

A Popeye injury? I had one about ten years ago, or more, but didn't bother to have it fixed, since the bicep seemed to work fine, even though it was no longer in the right place. However, adding a subscapularis tear to that a couple of years ago wasn't too helpful...Still proceeding with exercise/no surgery, though.

@Hurtle, yes, the Popeye I decided to undergo surgery though, as not only is the flexion affected, but also suppination.
The window for re-attaching the distal biceps tendon is 3 weeks. After this, it's still possible, but it's harder, as by then it'll have found a new place to attach itself to
After this - even after a few years, a repair is still possible - only now it involves some achillis tendon graft, borrowed off a cadaver
Don't we just love modern medicine, eh

@snowglider, yes, it's great, but I think it's wise to be cautious about any surgery. And although I've now got *some* loss of function, with all kinds of stuff going on in my shoulder and arm, not just the Popeye, it's mostly fine and I can live with it. Some weights and some stretching will be sufficient, I think (and the musculo-skeletal specialists at Tommy's seem to agree). Of course, if I get yet another injury to the same arm...
|
|
|
|
|
|
Hopefully you won't, @Hurtle, two's quite enough methinks - fingers crossed for you!
I love my heavy weights though, so for me having it repaired was an easy decision. But, by God, the recovery did take ages....
I've grown to view fractures as a minor setback now (had a few of those). Unfortunately, it's the injuries to the connective tissue (tendons, ligaments and cartilage) that are really tough to come back from.

Well not getting this fixed isn't an option as with it trashed I am down to one functional leg! Oh and the reaction of A&E reg at Derby to the brace UCL put on my leg was priceless. "Oooh make sure you hang on to that, we don't get to dish out fancy kit like that here!"

@davkt, what at horrible sounding injury. At RDH Mr Guetjens is problably your best bet for complex "soft tissue" knee injuries. . See if you can persaude them to send you to his fracture clinic, or transfer you if you're already down to see someone else). Other knee orientated surgeons are Straw and Pickering. Unusually for an orthopaedic department they actually talk to each other... (I am an anaesthetist there - RDH not fracture clinic!).

@skiinghamster, Thanks, not sure who the surgeon is on the list I'm booked in for tomorrow but the consultant in clinic today was Mr Pickering, 30 seconds of prodding and poking and he decided he didn't need bother with a CT scan as it was blindingly obvious what was wrong!
@snowglider, Don't worry I took your comments how they were meant.

Thanks. I'm sure it will then 4 to 6 months rehab and recovery and ready for next season. Current forecast is 6 to 8 weeks leg braced and locked straight, same time with gradually increasing but small movements allowed then begins the physio and hard work to restore movement and muscle tone.

@davkt,
Sorry to hear of your injury and quads rupture.
Try to establish if you can get the knee moving from day one. I find that that is much better than a long period in plaster/immoblisation after surgery.
Early movement reduces tendency for excessive scar in the knee. It also gets the rehab under way as early as possible. I'm afraid think it will be 6 to 8 months before sport, in most cases.

Thanks @Jonathan Bell, I've sent you a PM. Yep I know I'm in for a long slow recovery and am already giving myself stern talkings to about not trying to do too much too soon!
Weirdness going on now, I guess the disconnected muscle and tendon is sending strange messages to my brain as despite the fact faulty leg is locked straight my brain is totally convinced it is bent at 90º and tucked against the sofa like the other one. All very interesting to the scientist in me!

Ankle repair is currently a choice of 6 to 8 weeks in a cast or surgery to plate it. Am inkling towards the cast given that is well inside the time my knee will be locked
