Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Tragedy at La Grave

I just recently read the horrible account of Doug Coombs and his friend who both fell of a cliff to their deaths at La Grave on 3 April. I wonder what goes through the mind when you're falling 1600 feet. "Maybe I can stick the landing!" Anyway, what a terrible loss to his wife Emily and young son.

Dreadful, but from what I've read it was a 600ft fall not 1600ft so not quite such a long time to think, very sad for his family especially as it would seem that he only fell after going to see if there was anything he could do to help his friend Sad

Thank you for the information. I read one report that said they fell 1600 ft which I thought was a bit exaggerated. 200 meters made more sense. In any event, what a terrible tragedy. It makes one think before jumping into a couloir even in the best conditions. I've done plenty and once hit an ice patch in the Couloir Croix des Verdons (Courcheval) and took a long tumble; fortunately, the fall-out is pretty safe with no cliffs in the way....scared the hell out of me though falling down a 45 degree slope.

Some are lucky enough to survive horrendous falls of that type, though the injuries can be horrendous. Mike Browne, the founder of Snow+Rock, tumbled off a cliff while off-piste skiing at Sainte Foy (near Val d'Isere) and was paralysed. I can't remember how many ribs he broke in addition to the broken back.

I think I'm done with skiing majorly risky terrain - there have been too many victims.
