Poster: A snowHead

Can anyone recommend a good hire company at Geneva airport? And also advise on whether it matters if collection is on the Swiss or French side - will be driving to a french resort.
Also, does anyone know if you can get winter tyres? The resort we are looking at is La Rosiere 1850 so I’m thinking they would be a good idea.
We usually get ski transfer but the quotes we are getting are extortionate!!

As far as I am aware they wont garantee you winter tires on French side. But it is noticably cheaper. If I would go in March I might risk it, in Jan not so much. Swiss side would be a better choice then

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

The access road up to La Rosiere has lots of hairpins and was pretty snowy in Feb once when I was there, so winter tyres would be a definite advantage.
I believe all Swiss-side rentals have snow tyres fitted in the winter. Find a good price from one of the brokers using Skyscanner or Kayak.
I can't offer any recent Geneva specific advice, but Auto Europe, Holiday Autos, eBookers or Expedia have been good as brokers, most offer CDW insurance and free cancellation up to 48hrs before.
Compare prices for excess insurance and possibly buy it elsewhere. Refuse all extra insurances at the desk.
Also make sure the supplier is one of the bigger companies like Hertz/Thrifty/Dollar, Avis/Budget, Europcar, National/Alamo or Sixt and that it states winter tyres are guaranteed & included in the T&Cs.

Sorry forgot to mention: in Switzerland winter tires are mandatory on all cars through April. So you are getting winter tires for sure if you are renting on Swiss side. It is not a case in France. And often you cannot even request winter tires on French side. So if you are driving in the middle of winter and go high (like 1800 meters ) rent on Swiss side.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Thanks to you both for the advice. I’ll look into renting on the Swiss side.

Lymedo,
If you sign up (for free) with Quidco you will get cashback when you book car hire. We usually use Holiday Autos or Auto Europe, via Quidco.

Over the years I think I’ve used most of the main car hire companies in GVA and never actually had a problem with any of them. I always hire on the Swiss side and check everything over thoroughly before leaving.

Thanks all. Just booked via Auto Europe for pickup on the Swiss side. It stated snow tyres included so hopefully they will be on when we pick up the car.

and if they’re not then ask for a different car with them on, but as I think winter tyres have to be on Swiss cars by law then they will be, don’t forget to check chains too!
