Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Les Arcs - Peisey Vallandry - Peisey-Nancroix

 Poster: A snowHead

Any help appreciated here, we are staying in a chalet in Peisey-Nancroix in March, just interested as to how to get to and from Peisey Vallandry and Peisey-Nancroix?

On the first day we will need to sort out ski hire for a few, and may want to go out for drinks or dinner a couple of evenings too, I appreciate that it can be skid one way but is off piste (might be a bit of an ask for the FDB in our group) so how do most people get between the two? when the lifts are running can you download? I gather there are busses but I couldn’t seem to get my head around how often they run or between what times? It appears there isn’t much in Peisey-Nancroix so would be good to know we can go somewhere more lively!!

You get the lonzange lift, it is a little pedestrian lift that looks like lobster pots and goes up and down constantly taking less than 5 mins from peisey village to plan peisey /peisey vallandry. You stand on it holding your skis. It is fun. There is also a bus into the evening now- timetable online. But where in 'peisey nancroix' do you stay? If you are staying in nancroix next to the vanoise national park, and not in peisey then that is more isolated. I did my first ski season in peisey and loved it, it is beautiful and does have a couple of bars, gregs could get quite lively.

The villages are very confusingly named, with all the various hyphenated combinations. Up top, either end of a saddle, are Vallandry at one end and Plan Peisey the other. They are cheek-by-jowl, with a modern chairlift in each to go up and ski. In between the two is the Vanoise Express cable car which can whisk you across the valley to La Plagne, and just under it, the free 'telebene' cable lift which takes you down to the old village of Peisey. The telebene is often referred to by local Brits as the lobster pots - you will understand when you see it. You can use this lift in either direction.

Between the bottom of the lobster pots lift in old Peisey village and Nancroix is a shuttle bus that runs every half hour, calling at Le Moulin, Nancroix and turning at the Nordic centre.

Approximate timings: shuttle bus 8:30am till 6pm, then a one off about 8pm and another one off about 11pm. These may vary each season depending on what demand the Mairie expects and local pressure. There are minor variations with some early buses going up the hill to Vallandry rather than bottom of lobster pots and some Saturday specials, etc. Timetable is complicated, confusing and often best explained by a local or the tourist offices (one in Vallandry, one in old Peisey village). Lobster pots run approx 9 - 5.

There are no bars, shops or anything in Nancroix village save for Ancolie - more later. There are a couple of places around the Nordic centre and campsite and this is an easy walk of about 1 km. There are a few bars, restaurants and some small shops in old Peisey village and this is about 20 mins walk to / from Nancroix if you have skipped the bus.

For ski hire you may find the easiest is the small shop just above the top station of the lobster pots and under the Vanoise Express docking station / lift pass office. Ask nicely and they may allow you to keep your skis at the shop each evening and save having to carry them home each night.

Off piste: possible between Plan Peisey and old Peisey village but very few do it. It faces south and the snow cover rarely lasts long. Also possible from bottom of Combe button lift direct to Nancroix but again south facing and only nice skiing a dozen times a season. Important to get the navigation right else you will fall off a cliff. The late Davide Poisson's favourite run home, whose parents ran the Ancolie restaurant, reputed as one of the 10 best in the Alps. Not sure if mum is still running it after the sad loss of both Davide and his father 2 years ago.

This is really great, thanks! I think we will find out about busses when we arrive, good to know that the beginners will be able to use a lift to get to their lessons without having to strap skis on!!!!

We've stayed in Le Villaret 5 times over the years, and elsewhere in Peisey Nacroix on one more occasion. The lobster pots are the way to go to get to Plan Peisey and Peisey Vallandry, I think there have only been 2 holidays where skiing down was possible at any point in the week, but it wasn't pleasant! If anyone has morning ski lessons and the meeting point is Vallandry, you might have a problem - we potentially had that a couple of years ago, and the lifts didn't open early enough to be able to ski there, we would have had to walk from the top of the lobster pots. We changed the lesson time though.

There used to be a couple of restaurants in Peisey Nancroix, but last time we went there was only one, so your options are very limited.

There definitely used to be a ski hire shop, but we haven't needed it in recent years so I don't know if it is still there. It was the other end of the village to Le Villaret.

Depending on where in Le Villaret your chalet is, it can be quite a steep walk back from the lobster pots - one chalet we stayed in that was right at the top did have a minibus that shuttled back and forth if you wanted it.
