Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

What I think of La Rosiere now I've been.....

Simply superb is what I think! Unfettered by the straining commercialism of its bigger Tarentaise neighbours, La Rosiere was a delight to behold. Uncrowded runs, excellent snow coverage, stunning views over to Les Arcs 2000 and the Aiguille Rouge, genuinely nice local people, reasonably priced, a fair sized ski area, challenge for most-this was resort that hit the spot.

We stayed in the Petit St Bernard, right by the main access lift and it was pleasing to strike a pleasant chord with the proprietors who bothered to speak to their guests and take an interest in their vacation. Less, however, should be said of the 'snakejuice' one was forced to imbibe in the interests of the entente-cordiale after a particularly successful day's heli-dropping on the Ruitor glacier!

Yes, there's not much on piste challenge and the lifts aren't the most modern but these are trifling issues compared to the resort as a whole. This was a refreshing change to the contrived nonsense the yuppies of Meribel and Val D'Isere put themselves through each year in the name of being hip and trendy. I'd certainly go again and even I was seen on a pair of 'cheater skis' (Salomon Ten-Eighty-Foil-like being on a pair of water skis they were so fat!).

So really its attractions are not too many people and the accommodation is'nt too commercialised.

Just wonder how many skiers would prefer just to look at Les Arc 2000 and Aiguilles Rouge rather than to ski in them, even if they dismiss the biggest vertical drop of 2km run going from Aiguille Rouge to Vilaroger not worthy of a try.

saikee, I think the point made referred to the commercialisasion of the resort, not kust the beds.

Les Arcs has possibly the best piste skiing in the world and I would love to holiday there again. However every single one of the 18 in our party have voted to return to La Rosiere again next year for the 3rd consecutive year. Is vertical drop that imortant, after all 2x 1000m metre drops equals 1x 2000m drop in both skiing drop and uplift. The Espace San Bernado has many different options for drops of over 1000m.
For some of us it is a skiing holiday, not just skiing. If you go out with your excel spreqadsheet with the sole purpose of ticking off the piste when once skied then 150km will never be enough. Its all about whatever ticks your boxes.

saikee, I really enjoy skiing in La Rosière, especially when there's plenty of powder. I like the option of skiing into another country, having some real pasta, the different feel of the north-facing slopes on the Italian side compared to sunny La Rosière.

On the other hand the bigger domains are not all identical. Les Arcs/La Plagne is considerably less expensive than Val d'Isère/Tignes, but has some equally varied and challenging terrain, and at the right time of year, some excellent tree skiing. Plus you can find your way to some unspoilt hamlets such as Villaroger. When skiing is restricted to the pistes, I do think Les Arcs/La P is more interesting than La Rosière, and there are always some relatively deserted parts of the domain to be visited.

Right now, that would apply to a lot of ski areas. There are zero queues anywhere at the moment.

PG, What those of us confined to this side of the Channel for the immediate future would prefer to be told is that the lift queues are about to precipitate World War 111 and there is very little snow except on the highest slopes which in any event are full of boarders collected in groups sitting on their ar**s chatting to each other.

And its raining...

And French Air Traffic Controllers are on a work to rule...

It actually snowed in Coulsdon last night, all of 1 cm. All gone by lunchtime and the daisies reappeared.

PS. does anyone under 40 know what a work to rule is ?

note to self: must stop logging on here when I'm working...

Sorry Mike: heavy snow all afternoon; no lift queues; very quiet pistes; French youth law about to be reversed, so ATC guys happy to push their buttons...

I actually quite like La Rosiere/La Thuille and agree that it is a nice place, especially when there is sufficient snow around. Out of the 4 to 5 times skiing there I wouldn't dismiss the rest of Tarentaise in favour out it though. May be it is a good and compact resort to round up a large group of skiers because they have nowhere else to go. Dispersing them in the 425km piste Les Arcs and La Plagne is certainly a nightmare. The skiing to another country and back is definitely an attraction. The Tarentaise valley view in La Rosiere is truly stunning. The food is always excellent too.

Given a choice to have lunch at the centre of Les Menuire where food comes out like a production line or eat at a quiet mountain restaurent tucked in scenic spot of Petit St Bernard Pass I suppose the latter does make a holiday out of the skiing.

As I drive to each resort and have no opinion on its accommodation I tend to speak purely on the skiing side of the resort. To me La Rosiere is one of the many attractions available in the Tarentaise valley of 1600km piste.

PG

When it comes to "genuinely nice local people" I have nobody else but you in my mind in Tarentaise.
