On the lookout for more merino base layers. Going to be in Canada in Jan/beginning of Feb so want some more warm layers.
They are generally quite expensive, and I've spent about £35 on merino layers (top or bottom) from sportpursuit so far (they are 180gram and 100% merino, rather than the merino/polyester blends you tend to see advertised as merino base layers). Wondering if anyone has experience/recommendations for merino base layers that they like for below this price range at all?
What do people think about the Airblaster ninja suits? They are super expensive and I hear lots of good things but I don't know if that's all hype or whether they do actually keep you warmer than you might expect them to?

I got some XTM stuff at TK Maxx.....but haven't seen it recently.

Personally I think I prefer the merino/polyester mix - certainly that is what my favourite baselayer tops are - seem to be less hot and more breathable to me.

They have some in Aldi. No idea re quality but they are cheap.

@karansaraf, last time i skied in canada i had seven layers on. It was -40 overnight and -30c skiing. My skis were sticking to the snow no matter what wax i used. Great trip all the same, everyone on the early bus up the mountain was from the UK!

I have had Aldi ones for several years, worn for skiing and for sailing in what is laughingly called summer in northern climes. Absolutely fine, not itchy and washes well.

Aldi merino base layers are great. Depending on your size you might find some Odlo ones on the tkmaxx website.

Not cheap but Helly Hansen Warm lifa/merino mix are the best I have ever used and occasionally pop up on Sport pursuit (usually in the summer!)

Ultrawarm are XTM. However, I prefer two layers of icebreaker or mom's royale, or one over compression 3/4 base layer. All from the tiso sale.

I have Aldi and more expensive brands of merino clothing. Aldi fit well, feel good and are quite hard wearing. My experience of the more expensive brands is that they wear out more quickly. Aldi merino is better value IMHO.

Good to hear the comments about Aldi stuff. Ordered two merino tops. No bottoms available though, so the search for cheap ones continues...

@karansaraf, take a look on sportpursuit, not looked for a while but they usually have decent Devolo, Odlo, Janus and others at sensible prices, decent quality, never bought ski kit from Aldi or Lidl....... I like their Pacer Snickers rip-off bars so their ski gear may be equally decent.

Yes, I've found them to be just as good as pure merino (have both) - 50% merino seems to be enough to have the anti-stink characteristics and the polyester makes them a little harder wearing.
