Poster: A snowHead
|
So our family of three fancy a change from the normal beach holidays and we can’t afford Florida every year so we’ve thought about August in the Alps and Morzine is high up the list
I’ve looked at all the activities and there seems loads to do for our reasonably adventurous outdoors lifestyle
But I do like nice weather, is August T Shirts and shorts as a rule?
Also prices, we will probably rent an apartment, but enjoy meals out, am I looking at winter alpine prices of €10 for a beer and €20 for burger and chips?
Plan is to drive down in my Caddy, take the bikes and essentials, spend 11 nights or so and call back and do a couple of days at Disney on the way home.
Has anyone done such a holiday and could advise of any likely pitfalls?

We did Morzine a few summers ago and had a great time. There's a card which covers the swimming pool and the lifts, make sure your accomodation offers it. When we were there the weather was mid twenties and dry for the week.
Eating out was expensive but good quality. We self-catered to lower the cost.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Weather is generally hot and sunny but it’s still the high mountains so can get cold and rainy.
Loads of walking to enjoy. As well as biking although take care if you’re not experienced as the downhill tracks get serious quite quickly once past green/blue grades.
As a mountain biker I’ve been a few times and joined the throngs of other bikers. Mainly groups of blokes who like a drink after so you’d have to decide if that adds to the buzz in town or is a pain for a family trip.

Have been in LG and Morzine last 3 summers. Make sure your accomodation has MultiPass accrediation and you get access to lifts (minus bikes), pool etc for 2 euro per person per day. Loads to do - cascade stuff in Nyon, ropes in Nyon and down in main park, walking, running, biking obvs. Great fun. Weather usually warm with occasional thunderstorms of an afternoon. LAst 3 years we've had good weather mostly, last year a bit cooler.

...white water rafting, paragliding, good skate park, tennis courts, trim trail, horse-riding ..
There is loads to do.
As eating out every lunchtime and evening can get expensive, you can always picnic on the mountain at lunchtime, have a good home cooked evening meal, but then go out for a walk / drink / ice cream afterwards, to take in some of the evening air (if you are not too exhausted from the day's activities).

Loads to do and easy access to places like Thonon (late night fireworks over the lake) well worth getting into one of the dock side places to eat to watch. Day trips Yvoire + Annecy + through the Mt Blanc tunnel to Aosta are fantastic. Weather normally lovely and warm/hot, but if a storm rolls in it can get cool and wet but does tend to clear out after a few hours or days if it is a bad one. So pack fleecy and water proof to be safe.

we spent several weeklong vacations in Samoens, not far from morzine. There is tons to do, including day trips to Chamonix or even Italy. Mountain biking, hiking, swimming, tennis, climbing etc etc. The weather can be really changeable -- but generally is good. I love the Alps in summer, maybe even more than the beach. (I like the beach in late Aug/early Sept. when water is still warm but crowds have gone)

Best self catering deals are either from the local tourist office Morzine and Les Gets or the numerous estate agents.
Accommodation with MultiPass works out the best as does Sat to Sat even if you give up a day or two at beginning or end.
Les Gets has a Mechanical Musical festival every other year which is very special, wonderful atmosphere. Mountain Biking world cup event as well.

One of the great joys in the summer is sitting on the balcony watching a really big thunderstorm roll up the valley. That said it is usually hot and sunny, especially early in the day, with afternoon storms being not unusual.

@up4it,
The card that @grumpygargoyle, mentions is the Multipass.
Cost €2 per person per day if you stay in a multiples partner accom.
If you accom provider is not a mulitpass partner you can still buy one from the lift pass office but it costs a little bit more.
Gets you free access to brilliant swimming pool complex, free pedestrian access to the ski lifts, discounts on lots of other stuff such as the luge, etc etc.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

Morzine is great in summer, but don't assume it's going to be hot/sunny the whole time. It was 30+ when we were there in August, but you have to expect at least some rainy days in a week. Yvoire and/or Thonon are great outings for these days.

The outdoor pool down in Thonon next to the Lake is cracking. It's often 5'+ warmer there than Morzine.

@simonopt, You can also pop in next door and pick up a couple of cheeky bottles of Chateau de Ripaille on your way back.
