Hi everybody - I'm thinking of Solden for my Plan B at Easter as I have to cancel my Cervinia trip. I've always fancied Solden but I'm now reading things like; full of Dutch & Russians and 'can be expensive'. What are the thoughts from people on here that know the resort? How does it compare with Zillertal, aprt from the obvs 3 x 3000m + hills and the Apres scene.
btw its just me and the lad whose 14 - not quite ready for a full on Apres blast with the Dutch!!!!  - he can have a couple of sneaky ones though!

@Gaz_H, the comments could apply to many places in Austria not just Sölden, always lots of Dutch folk, Russians not so many. Easy to spend money too.
If you are looking at Easter I would give Ischgl serious consideration. Although snow conditions are good above mid mountain the runs down to the valleys are poor in many places, too much rain! From my couple of short visits to Sölden I have never been enticed to visit in the winter, there are far nicer villages and the skiing area does not excite. Clearly with the two glaciers and also Obergurgl it is a potentially good spot for late season skiing but I think there are better options, mainly Ischgl but potentially the Arlberg too (though not always so much open after Easter Monday). Not sure how good the Zillertal is from mid April, clearly the glacier should be good but not sure about the rest of it best ask on the Zillertal thread.
The Ischgl apres might be a bit "advanced" for a 14 year old (certainly dont tell his mother  )

@Gaz_H, It has probably changed now, but the very first and lasting impression I had of Soelden was as we entered the town there was a large poster of a lady taking her knickers down and I don't think she was advertising ladies lavatories. We went at Easter and the snow was OK. We even managed to ski back to town a couple times.

Visited Solden last Easter and thought it was superb. Don't remember any Dutch or Russians, seemed to be mostly younger Germans. I heard mention of a strip club but don't remember anything seedy. The apres was only really centred around three or four bars. The town itself is not attractive but the skiing was superb. Glacier snow kept good even at 3 o'clock on hot days in mid April. Obergurgl a bit more refined and sedate. Excellent wellness resort down from the town.
Thinking of making it a regular easter fixture.
Re Zillertal, its higher and more expansive in one particular area in Solden. I suspect absent lucky conditions the only viable skiing in Zillertal in Easter will be Hintertux, and while I like Hintertux, there is almost no atmosphere in the town and not much variety on the mountain.

I would favour Obergurgl over Solden in that area. Visited Solden last year late April for the Audi Nines. Snow was still okay although needed to download in the bubble to town. James Bond museum is awesome as is the Ice Q restaurant. But didn't particularly like the town. Strip clubs on the main street - haven't seen this many so prominently at a ski resort before.
Went to St Anton mid April and loved it.

@lottster, agree, Sölden is the ugliest ski town I've ever seen. I thought it was a good place to ski for a day on my way to somewhere else.

Yeah Solden isn't the prettiest but if good snow sure skiing at Easter is your main consideration then it shouldn't be a deal breaker. My main tip for Solden is to be within a short walk of either of the two uplift points. It's quite a long town and the stretch between the two lifts can get pretty busy with people and traffic. It could save you up to 10-20 mins each side of skiing. There are plenty of smaller accommodation options just above the lifts stations. Snow might not be good enough to make you want to ski back in the afternoon but you'll be able to slide straight there in the morning.

Thanks everybody. I'm keeping my powder dry until about 3 days before we go. There are good flights from east Midlands out to Salzburg. I cant get to innsbruck as they stop the week before.
As I type (at 5am on sunday morning) I'm watching bbc news and its breaking that Italy has made a new announcement that they are quarantining 16m people and closing ski resorts. Not sure which.
Anyway back to my trip. I'm really do fancy Zillertal in particular Gerlos, Zell or Mayhrofen......if I get a good deal I'll make the trip to st anton but it's a bit further.....

Zillertal pretty snow sure at Easter, I've been 3 times, snow always been good. But don't take my word for it, check out JimboS' thread with photos
