Had a sparkling new titanium hip end July which I will test run on Thursday at Chel-Ski. Just wondering if any other hippies have opted for shorter skis to increase manoeuvrability? How much shorter did you go? I’m 159, skiing on 158 and thinking of going down to 153 or even 148!

Everyone that I know with replacement hips just uses the same skis they did before.

@ja1sweeney@aol.com, If it makes you feel more confident then do it. My wife has had 2 replacements, resurfacing first followed a few years later by total hip replacement on the same side. She did all the physio and on both occasions was able to return to skiing more mobile than before the ops and skied on the same skis without any problem.

However I had a resurfacing almost exactly 8 years ago and havent changed skis at all - continued to use 170 or thereabouts. In fact I bought a set of fat twintips to use on Scottish crud a while back and they are 183 !

Mrs NBT had a hip replacement after a (non-skiing) accident and skis the same length as previously, despite nervousness at the prospect of another accident having similar disastrous results

Really appreciate you all taking the time to share your stories. I found it harder work on my skis back in Feb - probably because my hip was in so much pain by day 2. Seem to have convinced myself shorter skis could make lighter work as my other hip is on borrowed time. Hope to be back to skiing like a goddess once the other hip is done

I don’t think there is a strong medical case for shortening the ski unless you were already in a ski that was a bit long for your technique/ capability
Just make sure your binding aren’t too tight - but that goes for everyone .

Not sure there is much to add. If anything my father found skiing easier post replacement as it didn't hurt anymore. He stuck with his pre-hip replacement skis.
