Poster: A snowHead

looking at self catering in Avoriaz in early feb 2020. we have skied the PDS but have mainly stayed in the Morzine area. we are a family of 4 with two teenage boys. we are all good skiers and happy to ski any piste. not into off piste. we would be interested in experiences of those who have stayed in Avoriaz...specifically...
range of affordable restaurants, ease of driving there, best area to stay in for access from car parks, 1st week of feb or 2nd week ?, accessability of bad weather skiing, how well stocked is supermarket plus any other advice most welcomed. thanks

@backhojo, Avoriaz should be good then bit you could also consider Chatel which is vast and ticks a lot of your boxes and offers great varied skiing and trees in bad weather. It provides easy access to Avoriaz but also the Swiss side and other French parts of the PDS.

I went to Avoriaz a couple of seasons ago on the weekend it opened. It was better than I remembered from many years ago when I went to Morzine quite regularly. The super market was well stocked and the restaurants were good quality and not too expensive. However, this was two weeks before Xmas.... I would imagine that the legendary queues I previously encountered are still there in Feb as the lift system is still nearly as poor as it was in the early 2000's. It's going to be quicker to get into the rest of the PDS than staying in Morzine though, unless you drive to Ardent.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

@backhojo, first week would be my choice, second week is the first week of French half term. Doubt you would have any queues.
If @Klamm Franzer is basing comments on a visit early 2000’s I wouldn’t pay much attention, lots of new lifts since then.

Definitely avoid French holidays.

I'm reasonably confident that the first week in Feb should avoid school holidays next year, so (if that's the case, worth checking), that would be much the better week to go for. I go there for half term each year (by necessity it has to be half term for me on this trip) and, barring the odd pinch point (which you get used to avoiding), it's fine, as you can quickly get away from it all and the area is so big. Avoriaz has the distinct advantage of already being up the hill, so you don't have to contend with the queues down in the valley, too.

thanks everyone. we have gone for 1st week in feb due to french hols starting 8th feb. we found an apartment on airBnB for a reasonable cost right in the centre near the supermarket. now got to decided if we fly or drive. leaning towards driving and booking the underground carpark.
