Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

From the BBC

' Christophe Gernignon-Lecomte, director of the Meribel resort, told Radio Monte Carlo Sport: "He was shocked, a little shaken but conscious.

"It may be a head injury but it is not very serious."

He added: "He was wearing a helmet and banged [his head] against a rock." '

i.e. anyone of us would have sat down for a minute and got on with it - maybe had the rest of the day off Smile

There's nothing in that initial report about a "grave" injury. But anyone with a decent bash to the head needs observation for a few hours, if only by a switched-on relative. A friend of mine had a minor bike crash, hit head on pavement, slight graze (no helmet). Fortunately a witness insisted on calling an ambulance. she was initially perfectly lucid at A & E but then deteriorated and was transferred by helicopter to a specialist surgical unit in Southampton (internal bleeding) and spent a few days in intensive care and needing some weeks of rehabilitation.

Yes Natasha Richardson's injury was not thought to be much at first.

pam w, known in the A&E trade as a "smile and die" head injury.

Any head injury severe enough to have caused any loss of conciousness should be assumed to be serious until time has proven otherwise.
Ny deterioration after an initial "I think I am OK now" should be treated as very serious.

martinm, if it happens to you please don't be in a hurry to get on with it, as a result of head injuries I have one dead friend and one permenantly brain injured friend....I know what I am talking about sadly.

rungsp, had never heard that expression. Skullie My brother in law had a fall here and was woozy afterwards. Was wearing a helmet. I took him to the medical centre when he was still not right after an hour or so. the guy examined him carefully, said he thought he was OK, but that he couldn't do anything else anyway and gave me a list of symptoms to watch out for in the next hours. I was told that if concerned I should ring for an ambulance and have him taken straight to the main hospital in Albertville - and NOT to attempt to drive him down there myself. It was quite a scary time as he was vomiting for a bit. Without the helmet I guess he'd have been a great deal worse. And I suspect that my bike-crash friend would have been unscathed if she'd been wearing a helmet. She was a Turkish girl, lodging with us. We were away from home. If she'd had her way she'd have gone home to bed and we'd have found her dead when we returned. She owed her life to a passer-by who knew what to do and to alert triage staff in A & E in Portsmouth.

Agreed - but I can't see anything about losing conciousness in the report.

The reports I have heard here in Austria are that it is a severe concussion but because of his previous head injuries they are being super cautious about this one. Nobody is talking about a life-threatening injury in the mainstream media I've watched. Bild always sensationalises everything in order to sell copy, so yet another typical "red top" headline so far. I hope he is OK in the long run.

Good job he was evacuated by helicopter - nobody will be able to say that he didn't get the best treatment, or that people didn't take the accident seriously.

Head injuries can take a turn for the worse in no time at all things can seem to be getting better then rapid deterioration can set in with no warning due to the not knowing what is happening inside the skull.I just hope he makes a full recovery and that there is no more bad taste and pathetic jokes on here.

Sad Not good at all. He may have had an "interesting" attitude on the race track but his work with F1 was amazing. I always supported him because he has such an incredible talent - not just the driving, but the technical knowledge too. An incredibly intelligent and hardworking man with an unparalleled drive (pardon the pun!). And he did so much work for safety in F1 and road safety in general - who knows how many lives he has saved indirectly? Really hope he will pull through as despite his infamy over his racing decisions (and hey, he brought entertainment to F1, nobody can deny that!) his legacy and talent stretch far beyond the races. And yes, from what I saw of him in the media when not behind the wheel, he struck me as a really nice guy as well. I really hope it is not his time, he has so much more to give to the world Sad So sad.

As someone who was into F1 well before skiing i never liked Schuey but appreciate his achievements. Similar to some of the other very best drivers, would go for the win at any cost.
This has scared me into going for a helmet this season. If someone this athletic and skilled wearing a helmet can suffer like this why should i feel so invincible.
Prayers for a full and speedy recovery.

ianbradders, Unfortunately, when venturing off piste you never know when a rock my be just beneath the surface or ahead of a fall. I think that a helmet is a sensible choice when skiing on such ground, but it still won't give total protection, just a better chance. i always wear one and have had a couple of knocks where I have been grateful for it.

Hope he survives - but the news media are already reporting in the style of an obit - all they'll need to do if he dies is change 'is' to 'was'. I hate all this speculative 'news' when they really have nothing new to add.

I mentioned to my son about Schumacher's accident and he replied that he "knew his chef" when he worked in Meribel a few years ago, so it seems that Schumacher has a place there. He's probably an expert skier - really a freak accident. Sad
