Poster: A snowHead
|
Following the news that the Grand Massif will be closed for the rest of this week, my son and his group are abandoning their accommodation in Samoens and looking for the best options. Not sure if everyone will be heading to the likes of La Plagne and Val Thorens, etc. Should they consider elsewhere? Perhaps heading east into Switzerland? Just looking for best conditions given the lack of snow but also want to avoid a week of queuing. Any advice gratefully received!

Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person

Try les arcs and buy an essentials ski pass. It allows you to enter a priority lane and jump some lift queues.
It will not, however, give priority on the pistes.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Would take a bit of effort getting there, but Bardonecchia webcams look pretty good at the moment. As I understand it, they pretty much missed out on the rain but had benefited from decent snowfall beforehand. They could well find decent skiing and quiet lifts in Bardonecchia, just a bit of an effort getting there.

...or head further South, in the Ecrins. At least the eastern part of that range has exceptional snow conditions (considering), but Serre Che as well apparently.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Bardonecchia is an interesting idea -and only a little further than driving to Tignes, though more expensive with the tunnel.

@ChrisP3 I think I read somewhere that the Swiss are still off school this week so that may mean CH is a bit busier?

I don't think Switzerland is going to be any more busy than anywhere else in the Alps, and arguably may be a bit less so this week. The Swiss schools do get 'school ski weeks' in rotation after half term, before Easter, and so anyone who is on a programme or really keen will probably focus on one of those rather than NY week. There's a separate SnowHead thread re checking which canton has its school holidays when:
When is peak season in Switzerland?
Verbier and the other Quatre Vallées satellites (Bruson, La Tzoumaz, Nendaz, Veysonnaz & Les Collons) are in canton Valais, which is next to Canton Vaud. Almost all the Swiss schools are on holiday until the 6th. Jan 2023, but the load should be spread around everywhere fairly equally. The exception is Canton Schaffhausen (SH) which goes back this week, but that's in the very north of the country and I don't think it has any major high-altitude resorts, with Canton Zug going back on 4th. Zug's in central Switzerland but the 4th is Wednesday - so not a big advantage for the OP.
What's always worth checking is that a candidate resort isn't running some major ski event with lots of people coming in for it. This should be apparent from the resort website. Less easy to determine is if a candidate resort is hosting some major university excursion, where suddenly hundreds of students are going to turn up in what otherwise looks like a quiet week.

Thanks very much for all the advice. Slightly limited by what the transfer company could offer as they didn’t want to lose what they’d already paid for that on top of everything else, also limited for accommodation options. Have ended up with Sainte Foy which might not be the highest but appears fairly quiet and with reasonable snow. It’s a resort we’ve been to several times before so know what he’ll be getting to some extent.

It is empty in Verbier today (could be NYD hangovers?). Clear night meant we got the overnight freeze so pistes firm first thing and softening later. Pretty much everything is open. Off piste is now spring snow so touring options are on

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

Which might have been a useful thing to have told us at the start. Perhaps if you list where they can transfer you may get a more focused response.

At least they will be able to take local transport to Espace Killy or les Arcs (from Villaroger or BSM).
