Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Split Skis - Not what you might be expecting.

Just been doing a bit of pre-season ski web surfing and these caused a double take, apologies if this has been posted before.

I'm well aware of split boards, but these are a new one on me. The USP appears to be for the niche market of those who would take their skis and go skiing if only they were half the length Shocked

I know that split board hardware has evolved to the point where it is strong and reliable, but that is interfacing along the entire length of the board, but these are 104mm under foot, so it must be amazing engineering.

Personally I think it is a nice idea. Makes it easier to get them on the plane without extra charges / less risk of not getting on the plane when they leave the skis due to space.

I'm not quite sure whatever happened to it, the weblink given in the thread now seems to be dead. For those of you who wondered what the skis looked like here's a photo....

Could see this being quite good for approach skis or Nordic touring. Would need a lot of convincing to trust them for alpine skiing particularly on steep/firm snow

@Alastair Pink, Those RS1's remind me of active steering on the back of long trucks. Skis that can change their turn radius based on changing conditions Very Happy

@Mjit, Seeing as even a 150cm ski would result in four 75cm sections, which would weigh at least 5Kgs with bindings, add another 3Kgs min for your boots, and you would be pushing both size and weight limits for most hand luggage.
