Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Ski-in/out accommodation in Val d'Isere — Recommendations?

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hi Folks, I really appreciate your help and advice in advance snowHead

Any recommendations on ski-in/out accommodation in Val D'Isere?

Looking for a good hotel; or preferably, a good 3 bedroom self-catering apartment. Have a bit of money to splash.

Most years we go to Val Thorens, and that has loads of ski-in/out accommodation; but Val D'Isere seem to have much less of that.

And even if it's not ski-in/out, I would appreciate any recommendations.

How is the ski-bus service? I'm told it's every 5 mins; but can get full/packed at high season?

We are looking at the Avancher at present — they have some great apartments at a reasonable price. Anyone been there and can give a review?

I'm told it's possible to ski back to it — but it's a bit flat.

Thanks! Very Happy

The Toviere Hotel in La Daille would be worth a look. You just have to cross a road to get to the lift, you can ski almost back to the door.

The Train Rouge ski buses are great. They genuinely are every five minutes, and the only time they are full is Folie Douce kicking out time (which wouldn't affect you anyway if you stayed in la Daille).

Village Montana have 2 lots of self catered appts in Val D. Stopped in Chalet Skadi,( opposite Avancher) bus stop outside, or a 5-10 minute walk to the slopes. Very well appointed, pool, sauna etc, we shall be going again next season. https://www.village-montana.com/en/hebergement-val-disere/chalet-skadi.html Easy to get to Laissinant Chair, for a quick way over to Le Fornet if you go about 2 stops out of town on the bus. We walked back from town every night, Hotel Mourra had a lovely cocktail bar and was 2 minutes away.

They have scheduled opening of another, Chalet Izu in the old Solaise bottom cable car station, which is a genuine ski in / out . https://www.village-montana.com/val-disere/en/chalet-izia.html?*

These are not your usual tiny french appts, nice and big, and we are booking with Sunweb so free lift passes! I've even managed to convince Mrs Endo along which is some achievement.

No problem, you of course have great ski hire / boot hire if needed at Snowberry just along the road from there. Even though there is a shop next to where we are going, that's where Mrs endo will be getting kitted out.

Val d'isere ski in ski out is a difficult dilema. It really depends on the age and experience of skiers. Many ski in ski out in Val d are linked to what is a very icy, crowded, run at the end of the day.

My money would go on La Daille too, @HoneyBunny, as at the end of the day the run down to La Daille is less crowded and can be done by intermediates. (beginners would probably take the bubble car back)

The foremost reason for La Daille though, is the furnicular early in the morning. Speed, altitude, and less crowds early in the morning.

I speak from experience both from staying in chalets, chalet hotels in Val D village, and apartments and campervans in La Daille. Much prefer La Daille from a skiing perspective. Val D for closeness to nightlife (although I also prefer to sleep in La Daille due to the distance from Val D centre)

@Poogle, the location of Izia look great on paper, but be aware that although its ski out ski back will need a bit of thought. If your on the Solaise hill at the end of the day your ok. If your on Bellevarde and the Santons run (which the end of passes the building) is closed which it very often is in the afternoon you need the alternative of Face then Rogney lift or bus and 10 min walk. That area also has no supermarket/bakery so stock up.
I also like La Daille as @Bigtipper, @HoneyBunny, said. No nightclub so quieter at night. Supermarket/bakery and 5/6 restaurants within a few mins walk. The Toviere Hotel has added a new residence next door which may suit. Apartments sleep between 4 and 10. The ground and 1st floor were finished last season and the rest just last month and are currently being furnished. I’ve a few pictures if your interested.

@Poogle, I also think the hotel Toviere at La Daille is a good option.
The hotel restaurant Samovar another good option in La Daille.
Be aware these are not literally ski in/ski out. However they are a very short, roughly 150m, walk from lifts.

There are also apartments in the large, rather brutalist design block, piste side in La Daille. Not sure what they’re called.

In Val D itself there are a few chalets properly ski in/ski out in Legattaz area of town. Chalets Danielle and Sophie are a couple of examples. Not sure about piste side apartments.

@muppet, I think you can also return from Bellevarde on Epaule de Charvet, the black piste above Santons red ‘funnel’ piste. Neither Epaule, Face or Santons are easy towards the end of the day.

Chalethotel Chamois D’or another option, lower cost than La Daille hotels mentioned above.

Check out YSE chalets too, a few proper ski in/ski out

There are Front de Neige hotels, such as Bruxelles, which I imagine is very expensive.

Not at all! Your advice was really helpful, and we will look at that hotel and area. And the ski bus info was great — better to have a Snowhead tell us the truth, rather than hear something from a accommodation owner.

@PeakyB, I tend not to recommend Epaule de Charvet unless I know the skier level and as you point out at the end of the day these runs can be completely different than at 10am, at least with Face you can download via the Olympic lift.

YSE do have some ski in and out chalets in La Daille but also have a look at the chalets they offer with a free pickup/drop off service. VIP chalets are also excellent.

@muppet, I didn’t recommend Epaule de Charvet as a home run either. Just pointing it out as another option.

Depends on conditions but an end of day home run down Epaule I often find preferable to Face (shady, icy) or Santons (closed, busy, strewn with fallers).

Much better though are OK or Orange down to La Daille!

@Poogle, I would recommend looking at YSE as a quality operator that specialises in Val D. I also prefer staying in the main village itself rather than La Daille or Le Fornet, Laisanant etc as you can talk advantage of early evening strolls round the village and soak up the ambience much more easily. The old part of the village - up by the church - has properties that are almost ski-in ski-out.
I wouldn't rely on Santons/Epaule de Charvet for last run home as even if you are competent to ski them it's not uncommon for both to be closed due to avvy risk.

@Poogle, probably the ultimate ski in/ski out hotel in Val D’Isere is the Le Refuge de Solaise. Claims to be France’s highest hotel, at over 2500m.

They have an apartment too I believe.

Last season we spent about 4 weeks in the building over 2 different apartments. The hotel rented out 2 last season (1 was a longer let than us) I understand the developer is renting the others next season.

Amazing place, that I had not heard of. Beautiful, and opening this coming season.

But I don't think they would be very sympathetic to the "...bit of money I have to splash". Looks like I would need to mortgage my house to spend a week there! Shocked Very Happy

Yep , the included pass makes it, we drive, so get 8 days pass. I'm looking forward to trying the Avancher bar next year as well.

I also never saw any the described behaviour as I was 500m out of the centre and last visited Dick's Tea Bar in 1998.

There's something for everyone. The DM article describes "bottles of wine on offer for as little as £2 and beer at some bars starting at £1.50" I'd love to know where! We tend to stock up in a French Hypermarket en route, but the supermarket prices aren't silly either. Nice having a very quiet supermarket almost next door.

For town centre look at Aigle des Nieges. I have place in La Daille but have booked six rooms here for a client trip next year. Of the in town hotels, it’s the best connected but is also away from the noisier areas.

If I could, I would have booked Toviere in La Daille but Neilson are running it and are only doing 7 day stays. That’s a shame as the new apartments are amazing. Friends with us stayed there a couple of weeks ago and were blown away by the quality and size.

The buses are amazing in Val and are a continuous stream at peak times. They also run to about 3am. If you go clubbing to Doudoune they have shuttles that run you home, as do many of the best restaurants.

Enjoy your trip.

@bar shaker, Many thanks! I spoke with the very helpful Neilson, and they only do half-board in Hotel Toviere. They don't seem to have any of the apartments.
