Hello all.
We have always hired a car for this journey, but this time am considering the public transport option.
Understand this means bus to Innsbruck train station, train to St.Anton and then Post bus up into Lech.
Does anybody have an idea of typical costs and timing for this?
I should add that we are two adults and have Sunday-Sunday flights (22/12/19 to 29/12/19) we land at midday. Also wondering if there is a reduced service on Sundays.
All tips and strategies considered.
Thanks in advance.

There is is effect one train an hour from Innsbruck. The trains either stop at St Anton or Langen ie there is one train every two hours to St Anton. There are Post buses to Lech from both St Anton and Langen. The buses run regularly in winter though the winter timetable is not currently available, same on a Sunday as any other day (there is often a tie up between the bus and train times but this might not apply in winter). From memory the train ticket from Innsbruck to St Anton is around €17 one way, you can include the cost of the bus too so I would guess that would mean a total cost Innsbruck to Lech of approx €20 (not sure if you can get one ticket all the way from the airport I would guess so but it might be a private shuttle bus). You can buy tickets direct from OEBB see https://tickets.oebb.at/en/ticket.
In St Anton some buses go directly from the train station but if not the bus "station" is a very short walk, no idea about Langen but would assume the bus stop would be adjacent to the station.

@munich_irish,
Thanks! A lot of good info there.
Cheaper than I thought and Langen would work equally well.

The Langen bus stop is, in fact, right outside the station. We found out one evening when the Arlbergpass closed and hence the Post Bus back to StA also stopped. Caught the bus to Langen and then the train.

I've done train/bus via both St Anton and Langen and found the Langen change easier and less crowded - but it will depend on your timings of course. A tip for the trains - work out where on the platform 2nd class will be, to avoid having to lug your luggage half way through the train.

@1gunsalute, there are a number of plans on each platform showing where the various carriages will stop (there are section numbers on the platform A, B, C etc) plus this information is shown on the platform indicators. My experience is that the trains are not so crowded between Innsbruck and the Arlberg so unlike travelling from Munich seat reservations or 1st class are less necessary but if you have lots of luggage it is probably best to book seats, it only costs a couple of Euros.

Do you have any discount cards take 50% off below??
If not
Airport to Innsbruck Hbf Bus
Approx €2 from machine costs another 0.50cent from driver.
Innsbruck to St Anton Train
Approxe €17 .00 2nd class
St Anton to Lech Bus 92

Its to late now but FYI
Zurich is better for Lech in case the Arlberg Pass is closed ...

@1gunsalute,
Thanks, this is also useful.
It would appear Langen is our preferred choice.

The transport company has recently launched a new app called VVT tickets where you can plan your journey and buy tickets cheaper than on the bus. You can buy a ticket from Innsbruck Flughafen through to Lech with various route options. Afaik, there is no cost advantage to buying in advance, so you can do it once you land in case of delay.
Tip: create an account and add your credit card *before* you buy, then you shouldn’t have to do it every time, although as a visitor it’s not really a big deal.

A few years ago I bought a rail ticket and lift pass combined. Was good value and included a taxi to your accommodation. Worth checking out if still available

my reply is a bit late but in case it is useful there is a good M Preis at Innsbruck Hauptbahnhof, ground floor - it also has a bar and you can buy a nice hot roast chicken sandwich for very little. THere is another one too across from the bus station, very near (across and left) which has a Thai takeaway - also very good value and tasty. Saves you having to buy something slightly grim and expensive on the flight.

Wow! Thanks all - some great in-depth advice here.
Certainly looks like the train option is a winner here- the cost saving is large and the additional Faff is minimal.
@brandegg, not late at all and as we have no local Innsbruck knowledge, it is very helpful to get tips like this.

@Cas, The only other thing to potentially factor into your thinking is that the first road to close are the Stuben hairpins on the way up from Stuben to Flexenpass, so if its snowing heavily late afternoon on 22nd December, and you are arriving about 4-5pm in the dark (and often very cold late December, short days) it can come down very heavy that time of day and the Langen/ Lech buses may not be running up to Zurs/ Lech whereas there are always Post Bus traffic and taxis heading between St Anton and Lech ime. Otherwise good plan to get off at Langen (check it stops there, not all do), and you may be able to share a taxi with others who are hanging about waiting for the next bus, we've done that before.....costs more but when you've been travelling all day its surprising how you'll throw a few extra €'s about to just get there (well I would anyway!)

You could ask you accomodation in Lech to come and pick you up from Langen.
Like everthing in Austria HORECA if you dont ask you do dont get...
Your be surprised what they will do..

@Markymark29, you have raised a good point about the vulnerability of the switchbacks above Stuben.
They are not only the most awkward climb but are also uncovered roads (unlike Arlberg/Flexen Passes) for the climb sections.
Thanks

@Markymark29, the first track in the area to close is that between Alpe Rauz and St.Christoph, not Stuben-Alpe Rauz.
99% of the time roadclosures are due to avalanche danger, not snow-on-road/hairpins
