Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Dislocated ankle??

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
I was hiking in the mountains today, when suddenly I was over!

My right foot had turned into a hidden hole in the path and along with a searing pain I heard an ominous "crack"

Lying on the ground, crying out, I saw my foot was at a totally unnatural angle to my lower leg...It was turned inwards at a bit less than 90 degrees!

"Oh feck!" etc...I wiggled my foot and..."CRACK!" it snapped back into place!
Hurts like hell.

I bum-shuffled down 100m or so to a good path and slowly limped back to a lift, about 2 miles. Slow.

Strangely it has not swollen all that much, and was slow to do so (I expected it to baloon up)>
Ice, compression bandage, elevation for the last few hours.
I still hurts, but I can support my weight and limp around sort of OK.

I wonder what damage I have done and what medical (if any) assistance I should seek?

Any informed opinions??

You need to go to an Emergency dept for an X-ray. Likely to have a fracture with an associated subluxation that you have reduced though i have seen a few patients who have a ligamental injury only.

Get yourself a good feed and a good book, and then a lift/taxi to A&E. I thought mine was twisted and could walk on it, but the x-ray showed it to be a fibula fracture at the bottom of the bone. The sooner you go, the sooner you can be recovering.

A sprain or ligament tear, I hope that is all.

@rungsp, it does sound a little bit like when Annie broke her fibula. It's worth nipping down the road and getting it x-rayed. Hope that it is just a sprain.

Unless you are hypermobile I doubt you have dislocated without a fracture. Sprained ankles don't deform in my 25 years of A&E experience. Swollen and painful but not 90* angles!

Please tell us the results!

So...off to the excellent Dr Popescu in Verbier this morning.
A quick form to fill in and a glance at my EHIC card and that is the admin taken care of.

Examination and x-ray on the premises.
No fracture!
Am MRI scheduled for tomorrow afternoon, I will have a disc to take home.
MRI results on Friday.

He is sure there is ligament damage, but how bad? The MRI will reveal all.

If minor damage then time, rest and physio.
If bad an operation.

In the meantime I have anti inflammatory and an ankle stabilising brace to wear, plus crutches.

Basic research indicates that it will take flippin ages to get operated in the Blessed NHS.
Something like £4,000 all told if done privately.
Or I could just come back to Switzerland in a week or two and get it done for free.

OK...not totally free...I will have to pay chf92 for everything, including an operation.

I can't help but wonder why we think the NHS is so wonderful? Could any GP have examined, x-rayed and MRI in 24 hours and arranged an operation within a week?

O
I REALLY hope that EHIC survives Brexit...it might do.

The bill will becoming UK way... No way would you have had an MRI so easily/quickly on the NHS. Europe use our NHS as a cashcow when people get injured abroad.
You should be claiming off your travel insurance TBFH

Hope not too much damage. I had a Grade 2 sprain (partial tear) of an ankle ligament a couple of seasons ago. Took best part of 12 months to get back to 100%.

I think almost no chance of EHIC surviving Brexit given how much ‘benefits tourism’ was an issue in the referendum. Absolutely zero chance if we crash out with no deal.

@Mr.Egg, I don't get what you mean?

Why should I be claiming off my travel insurance?
92chf hardly worth insuring for...and in fact we never have travel insurance for our trips to Switzerland simply because EHIC really does work in Switz.

I guess the bill will be coming to the UK, not to me but to the NHS.

In any case EHIC is an amalgamating arrangement for Reciprocal healthcare...you treat ours, as you treat your own, and we treat yours, as we treat our own.

@rob@rar, there are reasons to think EHIC will survive Brexit...it is a wholly desperate treaty, it never was part of the EU itself.

Time will tell... fingers crossed

 You know it makes sense.

@rungsp, you’re right to say it’s not an EU treaty. My understanding it’s that it is an agreement between EEA members? We will not be members of the EEA after Brexit, so not eligible for the EHIC scheme?

It's not per se.

People think it's wonderful because it is free, accessible to all and it looks after the sick. Plus there are a lot of very good people who work in it.

But yes it can be quite inefficient.

I was referred for an x-ray recently by my GP. I got a letter a few days later for an appointment 3 weeks later. I couldn't make the appointment because I was away and it was a nightmare to get through to tell them this. But ironically when I did finally get through they found me an appointment for a couple of days later and when I turned up I was straight in and it was done in 5 minutes.

Now I've course I have to wait for the info to go back to my GP who will no doubt not call me. So I will have to chase and struggle to get an appointment in a decent timescale.

And quite a lot of insurance polices state in the small print that you are expected to go the EHIC route...

MRI done.
You have 5
I have 4

Key ligaments in the ankle.
One of them is totally broken, the others are ok.

Full report from the doc tomorrow but the Radiologist thought that 4 is sufficient to not need surgery.
I'll see what the doctor thinks tomorrow.

On return to the UK I will probably book a private consultation with an ankle orthopaedic specialist, I have the MRI on a disc, and x-rays.
Roughly £250 and a second specialist opinion would set my mind at rest either way.

If surgery is the plan I think I will come back to Switzerland as it can be done much, much more promptly.

4/5 might be enough

The ligament peroneo astragalien is the broken one.

if it had happened in the UK you would have waited weeks for an MRI, then a few months to see a specialist & a few more months for the results & a few more months for surgery

yet people seem to love the NHS!
People dont see the advantages of Private Medical Insurance, until they actually need to use the NHS for something that is not life threatening & cant be sorted in A&E
