Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Just picking up a taxi at the airport?

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hi,
Has anyone tried just jumping in a taxi at the airport and heading to a resort that way? I'm going to VT from Chambery in Jan and I was wondering how much that might cost. There are 4 of us, without equipment and so far shared or private transfers are looking at costing us about £70 pp. I was thinking, surely we could just jump in a taxi for that! Surely it won't cost more than £280? HAs anyone done that?
Thanks for your advice?[/code]

I've done it once before from Geneva to Morzine when a flight was badly delayed and we missed our shared transfer, think it was about €200 from memory for the 90minute journey.

No problem getting a taxi at Geneva airport but I'm not sure it would be that easy at Chambery - I don't remember there being a 'taxi rank' as such as not really enough market for it...?

ben1, From what I recall there is no other way out of Chambery airport. There are no bus services into town from the airport. My wife flew into the airport and found a taxi fairly easily to the railway station; however my nephew found it very difficult to get a taxi from the station to the airport. For relaibility I suggest that livhuntly, books a taxi in advance.

livhuntly, there are a couple of taxis outside the airport but it doesn't mean that they will be keen to drive you all the way to Val Thorens. Try to ask for shared transfers and then you can wait until last minute to see if anything comes up. It's more likely you get a good deal if a taxi company would have an empty journey otherwise or maybe you can share with a few more people to fill a minibus.

If it's a Saturday then taxis will have plenty of lucrative business to choose from; not too likely to be hanging round waiting for clients who are hoping for a bargain.

Dia_FindTransfers is being very good in not actively promoting his own business, but I'm happy to do so, having used it very successfully!

If you click on the link at the bottom of his post and click on 'shared and last minute' you can post your requirements, and then hope that someone either wants to book to share with you, or there is a transfer company that has an empty leg having dropped someone at the airport. I suspect the chances of finding something for Chambery are not as good as for Geneva, but it saved us a fortune on a Tignes transfer at a funny time a couple of years ago.

I would have thought that pre-booking a transfer would save you a small fortune, especially if you go for a Dia_FindTransfers / Ben's bus type option.

you might want to check that the taxi has chains. On an Easter drive to Tignes we were flagged over by the Gendarmes to fit chains (along with everyone else) and were approached by a couple of guys who's taxi (To Val D, so we couldn't help) could go no further because it didn't have chains.

Seemed a bit off for a taxi to a resort.

We were told confidently by the airport that there'd be a taxi to take us into Chambery to get a train, but when we arrived there were no taxis and the information desk said there were none to be had anywhere (it was half term Saturday). Fortunately we accosted a taxi that happened to be dropping someone off and he got his girlfriend to come out so we had enough room.

It may well be on a less busy weekend there'll be plenty of cars, but I wouldn't risk it again (well to be fair I won't fly to Chambery again, but that's another story!).

ive not got a taxi from chambery to resort but i have approached the tour operators who had buses departing and asked if hey had any room for 3 people without luggage and had no issues grabbing a lift. Done it 3 times now.

Depending on if you are wanting to save even more money, you could get a taxi to the train station and get off at Moutiers and then get the bus up to VT

Is there some reason why there aren't more coach services from airports to ski resorts? You would think the hotels in each resort would want to encourage people to go independent rather than with a tour operator.

@madlondoner, Altibus run a good scheduled bus service to the majority of resorts in the Savoie area of France from Chambery, Geneva and Lyon airports - http://www.altibus.com/pages/aeroports.aspx?cp=en
Bensbus run a service from Grenoble and Geneva airports although a bit more limited than Altibus - http://www.bensbus.co.uk/

Altibus aren't running from Chambery this winter for some reason. It's a right pain in the back bottom trying to get from Chambery to resort. I might have to copy @snow_badger, !

Our driver from GVA to Les Arcs ran the meter in his taxi last Saturday (presumibly to charge to Club Med). Even pretending to be Sebastien Loeb in the Monte whilst going up the hill it topped out at £460 euros when we stopped Shocked

@pam w, I'm just worried about the state of the OP after 8 years outside Chambery airport - I mean, lovely weather in summer, but a bit parky in winter.

From my experience in Lisbon, good luck - Lisbon arrivals is where all the dodgy taxis wait to gouge tourists, way too many stories from me and others. When we want a reliable taxi we walk round the corner to departures, and flag down one who's just disgorged its passenger. Never a problem.
