Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Time for this seasons (or any seasons for that matter) scary but compulsive footage of avalanches.

What's that about pole straps and skiing off piste?

I'm sorry but your comment sums up everything thats wrong about people's attitude's towards avalanches, particularly in the media's approach to professional free skiing. Is Mr. Avalanche supposed to be a compliment? "Powerfully irresistible"? Do you like snuff movies?

Every avalanche should be regarded as a failure to be learned from, not a hi jinks scrape to be laughed about in the bar afterwards. This kind of crap is spreading the theory view that people might be 'good' enough to ski out of an avalanche. Its just irresponsible.

I'm sure you would never be buried with the amount of hot air your self righteous indignation generates.

Yes I do look in awe at this footage.

It IS compelling.

And by your measure it is as educational as it is by my measure irrisistable. This footage is just the same as the touring slide shows of the Alps in the late 1800's, there is a fascination, (ghoulish? so what?) for activities that have the potential to go wrong. Why did you watch it?
I can laugh about if I choose since I don't choose to reflect upon it with a pseudo solemnity that you seem to think is appropriate.

As for irresponsible... Well you won't want to watch this and shiver with adrenaline that this situation stimulates through vicarious projection...

I did the same couloir last winter. My guide said it would avalanche and it did, but the sides are good enough that you can ride up them and wait for it to go. If you didn't know (it's seriously steep - you should know), then it would be one hell of a ride down it!

I'm not really sure I understand I know it's not your video but at 00:30 the couloir appears to be a narrow funnel with exposed rock sides, if you're caught there you have at best a wild ride. Did your guide deliberately cut the slope allowing it to release before you skied it or did they allow you to ski it releasing the avalanche and hoping you weren't in the narrows so you could ride out the side?

I went first, knowing it would slide. I'd discussed the plan with my guide and I waited up on the right hand side (where the snow was thin), for it to wash down. The couloir is approx 1.4m wide at the narrowest point. Because it is so steep, the slide travels really fast. There are safe places to go to above the choke point and it's somewhere I would do again.
