Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Alaskan ski resort struggles for survival

 Poster: A snowHead

It seems that even an Alaskan location offers no guarantee of survival for a ski resort.

Eaglecrest, in south-east Alaska, which opened its first chairlift in 1976, has never made a profit since then and has therefore been supported by a local authority. As with other struggling ski areas, the emphasis is now on developing year-round reasons for visiting the place.

But the chips are down, as this report from Juneau Empire explains.

Yet again snowHeads has diverted me from Very Important Medical Matters ( anatomy ).
Eaglecrest is near Juneau in the Alaskan Panhandle.
Alaska to me meant cold and snow and tundra, but it seems this southern part is much milder.
Indeed it is on a similar latitude to Scotland, and we all know of the trouble ski resorts up there are having.
What's more, this article suggests Alaska is having a worse time with Global Warming than other areas. Tough. Sad

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

I've skied Eaglecrest a couple of times, doing clinics for PSIA, and it's a great place (Juneau is a charming town with the friendliest, best sports in the world). It is situated on an island--if you get lost OB, the U.S. Coast Guard is deloyed for the rescue. The lift operators keep squeegees at their stations to clean the chair pads for the new occupants, and skiers arriving at the base sometimes sink into the muskeg (sp?) and have to slog their way to the lift line. The terrain is lots of fun and they can get good snow, though there's a reason the clothing manufacturers do their moisture tests at Eaglecrest--it's the wettest place I've ever been skiing.

I'll wager the community will continue to keep Eaglecrest going.
