Ski bindings, as discussed elsewhere, are now mainly incorporated as integrated systems with skis (which raises the interesting question: what's most important to your piste-of-mind, the skis or the bindings you're forced to buy with them?) so is it still a prominent consumer issue?
I'd contend that it is!
Here's an article just posted on the US 'Ski' magzine website: Bindings 05-06.
Any feedback on that article welcome. One useful thing it points out is which binding factories are making bindings for which brands of skis.

David Goldsmith, I'd contend that I know nothing about skiing and less about bindings.
I would however contend that :
a) This is a US ski article
b) That 'Marker' bindings are either manufactured /owned by US interests
c) That 'Marker' bindings are fitted to the predominant US ski brand(s)
d)The power of marketing and free lunches is not dead.
( I have deduced all of the above from the article itself with no knowledge whatsover)
I would howver love to know which bindings are best for dodgy knees but through the marketing hype all I see is fog

I'm not able to view the article for some reason but...
a) True
b) True (K2)
c) True (K2)
d) a scandalous accusation, sir!
I'll comment more when I've read the thing. Or not.

Turntable Looks/Rossis, imho.
And don't crank up your DINs!

Maggi, go for either a Marker binding, or pay extra and get titanium ones, which are lighter than ordinary metal ones.

Maggi, consider the Marker M900EPS or Salomon S710Ti

Thanks. I'll look them up. Although from what I've seen so far it seems that most women's (ie lighter) skis come complete with bindings. Titanium? Sounds expensive

Wear The Fox Hat, Thanks ... apart from Rossi , which other manufacturers incorporate Look bindings into their skis ?
I actually ask the specialist to crank my 'DINs' down a bit , I know that might start another argument about the 'correct' settings but if nothing else it gives me peace - of - mind.

eEvans, Rossi, Look and Dynastar tend to share bindings. But note: Look have dropped their old turntables, and I don't know if the new ones are as good.

The figure for the new Pivot2 series of look/rossi binders actually state a greater amount of elastic travel than the previous incarnation. So, in theory, the new ones are an improvement on the older ones.
(Elastic travel is what made the Look/rossis so good for the dodgy knee brigade)
Ohh, and Markers suck!!!

Generally, I am not too fussy about the bindings and as I'm on hire skis most of the time I get what I get.
I pay the big extra for Premium skis and I always like to do my own binding check - for peace of mind if nothing else -, and I talk to the tech and if I don't like the shop or what I hear I go somewhere else. I have found that if you engage the techs and owners - who are likely to be very keen skiers and better than you - you can get very nice pieces of kit that they have out back somewhere.
And as such if I tell them I want a deep snow ski I expect it to fiited with a binding that will be easier to get on in deep snow. I have hardly had any reason for complaint - except when the didn't have b5's last year when I hunted high and low...ha!
Mostly I find it quite easy to find shops that have techs who have far more knowledge that I do. I just try and make sure the binding works with my boot - I'm a standard size - and I'm happy.
Oh, and I try to look after their kit as if I owned it..I like to take them back without a scratch, so none of this "coming through, hire skis" on rocks etc..!!
As long as it is maintained and serviced it should do a job.

Oh come on guys.
1, They make by far the best, progresive flex boots. If they fit you!
2, Until 2006-2007, they will continue to make the least best skis on the market.
3, They continue to make; the safest, most responsive and most adjustable binding on the market, NO COMPETITION!
4, They now have a real, parent company!
No need to search in the mines for this answer!

@Gordyjh, for ACL look at kneebindings-
http://www.kneebinding.com/KB-HomePage.aspx
they are the only ones (to my knowledge) that profess to protect against ACL rupture and what I have fitted to my skis precisely for this. I got them fitted after damaging my reconstructed ACL.

@NickyJ, I looked at their video and was unclear if they were any advance on Tyrolia’s diagonal system which has been around for years, now with 180 degree release toes as well as 150 degree heels. I also wondered about how you might catch an edge under foot without having first done it at tip or tail, by which time your ski has come off or the damage is already done.
Having tweaked LCL, MCL & ACL in minor fashion over the years I would say that in my experience twisting caused the LCL & MCL damage but it was sliding backwards into a hard bank which caused the ACL so I am not clear how a laterally releasing heel would help there.
I was mostly wondering whether there were any recent reviews online which took into account safety features.

@Gordyjh, the injury when I originally took out my ACL was a proper twisting fall which I would very much hope these bindings would now protect against.
As I understand it, you could catch an edge if you ended up with some damage to your edge. Good discussion to start IMO worthy of a new thread.

Not sure were you got your specs from for Tyrolia's diagonal release (which has now been dropped from most of their bindings) but the diagonal/rotation of the heel is more like 15 degrees in each direction and a boot cannot be released straight laterally from the heel like the Kneebinding.
Ironically the nearest thing to a lateral release like the Kneebinding is a Dynafit Beast/Rad 2/Rotation.

@spyderjon, you expert, me gullible dickhead!
One just assumes advertising regulations apply EU-wide. If not, there seems less point in remaining...
Being practical, there must be a reason Tyrolia doesn’t do diagonals any more and Marker & Look no longer make bindings with turntables under the heels. Is the Kneebinding all it’s claimed to be on its website, especially given it’s American and not subject to European advertising standards?

@Gordyjh, Look brought back the Pivot binding in 2012 (IIRC) and it's been in their line-up since then and is currently available in 12, 14 & 18 din versions. It's pivotting heel is favoured by performance skiers due to its high range of lateral/vertical elasticity and power transmission but the heel design doesn't necessarily make it more safe as the boot doesn't actually release laterally from the heel.
The Kneebinding is the real deal and skis great but is nigh on twice the price of a good quality 'regular' alpine binding and as it can only be mounted on to a flat ski it's very difficult for it to compete against the rail systems on most piste skis especially as, with the exception of Vist, all the other alpine binding manufacturers are effectively owned by the big ski brands who are only going to put their own bindings on their skis. The Kneebinding is designed to mitigate against the majority of the scenarios that'd caused ACL/MCL damage but there's still positions that a skier can get in to that they can't mitigate against and for which the mechanisms required to combat would be too bulky, heavy and expensive to be commercially viable.

I’ve just bought skis with Look SPX12 bindings mounted, I assume they’re OK.
Why don’t Tyrolia still make Diagonals?
|
|
|
|
|
|
@Gordyjh, ok for what? They will be fine for skiing I am sure but as I said above they won’t protect you from an ACL injury.
When I bought my new skis, I paid spyderjon to remove the bindings they cake with and fit my kneebindings onto the skis. Just as he did when I bought the bindings from him originally. I kept the bindings and reinstated them to my first skis, I am doing the same with these new ones.
