I am trying to fit in a late season weekend dash to the snow (21st-25th april)4nights for my family(2+2},having managed a couple of weeks already this season this one has got to be a cheapy?My instinct is to get a cheap flight to geneva and maybe ski one of the fairly family friendly resorts within an hour or two of there but some of them are fairly low in altitude and also may be closing their season around then?
Has anyone got any suggestions about which resorts are open and where we are likely to find snow and not grass ? Maybe you have some advice, as although I have skied all over the place I have never been as late as this.
I am totally open to suggestions

The Flaine/Grand Massive area has a good snow record and is about an hour and a bit drive from Geneva.

Turin to Cervinia may also be a consideration for high resorts close to airports. But I am not speaking from any personal experience...

hedley, I'm planning a similar short break but for the last w/end in April. I'd say it's worth the extra hours driving to go somewhere like Val Thorens (you may bumb into snowheads on the EOSB) or Val d'Isere, maybe even La Rosiere which is supposed to have a good late season record. Or alternatively head the other way to Saas fee or Zermatt.
Like you have never been so late so a bit unsure, but think we'll play it safe and head to Val T or Val D.
Another option would be flights to Salzbug then head for Stubai or Hintertux glaciers ? Good luck.

masmith, thanks, I had considered the high snow sure resorts but mainly seem to involve the longer drive,also only some resorts will be open this late,does anyone know of a good resource for the closing dates of resorts?

hedley, not sure of a central resource for the closing dates but each resorts website has the details - mainly on the pages containg lift pass prices.
I've found that only a few resorts are open at the very end of April but many more are open to 24 April and most of the rest closing the previous week.

hedley, La Rosiere usually has good snow until the end of April, this season the resort closes 23rd April , although if previous seasons are anything to go by, there'll still be plenty of snow just no lifts running.

tignes normally stays open into may.
Skiing on les grand montet in chamonix will be possible then. don't know about the other chamonix bits.

does anyone know if there will be any decent skiing within a couple of hours of basel airport at this time of year? flight times to geneva arent family friendly but basel give enough time to get to a resort before late afternoon .

hedley, I think that Engelberg has a glacier?? That's within easy reach of Basel.
