Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Engelberg Guidebook?

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
So it looks like I might have volunteered to organise a trip to Engelberg next season. It'll be experienced off-piste skiers/ski tourers so I don't think a guide will be necessary from a safety point of view. However, I would like to learn some of the secret spots and maybe some nice daytours.

Is there a guidebook out there which covers this sort of thing? Any language (although English or French preferred).

No need to tell me about the Laub, stuff off Jochstock (at least the stuff which ends up by Trubsee anyway) and the glacier under the Titlis Rotair cable-car - I've scoped those out on a weekend visit already. I'll also be buying the Swiss "S" maps with the ski-touring routes - looking for something a bit more pictoral/descriptive than them.

Thanks!

Arno,

You should have posted this before as I've just got back.. As you know, the place just throws up more and more but I don't think there is a definitive guide book
as there might be for other places, so someone who knows is the best option. Of course you can find the Laub but you can ski all the way down through the trees if you know where. There is a drop off the top of Titlis into the next valley. That is the one looking south from the veiwing station, don't know where you end up or the way back but I know of a few people who have done it. Then there is the route off the Titlis glacier down into the hamlet further up the Engelberg valley but of course, you need good snow to get to the bottom. You can see the tracks when you are going to the laub, just look right when you see a break in the rocks and a whole new valley beckons.

If you get the chairs on the left back up towards the Glacier you will see a hill that will take 30min walk. good tracks can be made there if you are bored and looking for something different.

There is a walk off of Jochburg to a col which you can see from the chair. It lies straight ahead and I would think it is a 90mins treck. What is off the back I wouldn't know but again you will be in another valley so transport back will be an issue.

You might want to split the trip and incorporate Andermatt which has a few more trips which should be feasible for good route finders of the back of Gemstock.... Didn't get to explore that far myself. Make sure the snow is good in Andermatt as the region needs good snow cover IMV. You'll love the place tho' I know...!!

It seems the Swiss are a bit blase about their back trips and don't publicise it as the French would, I think.

JT, thanks for this - all good info. Looks like I am going to have to rely on the S maps (obviously, Engelberg lies on a join so I am going to have to buy at least 2 Mad ), useful posts like yours and the scoping I have done already
