Poster: A snowHead

Just heading to Heathrow for my flight to Munich. Got a call from the taxi company taking us to Kitz to explain that they were cancelling due to road chaos between te airport and resort. He said that the main motorway and side roads are basically closed, many fligts in/out of Munich are cancelled... even the train at the moment is not running. I'm still going of course. Will just have to see the lie of the land when / if we arrive. Might spend a few days boozing in downtown Munich.
Funnily enough, the Kitzbuhel Tourist Office told me almost the exact opposite story... only a bit of snow on the roads and a slightly longer journey time to/from Munich. Taxi driver tells me he can't even get out of Kitz! Who do you believe at the 11th hour?
If we do make it (I assume the trains will get going during the day) the conditions should be fairly epic.

JohnHill, the airport is open despite the fact that an Airbus slid off the runway yesterday, and the S-Bahn from the airport to Munich is running as well. All other train services are severly impaired. I doubt the train to Innsbruck will be running. The situation on the Autobahn is getting better, but a lot of country roads are closed due to fallen trees, lorries blocking the road, and dutchmen trying to get their snowchains on ( thankfully the dutchmen have mostly left their caravans at home though ).
I can see you getting as far as Kufstein without too many problems, but not sure whether the road from Kufstein to Kitz will be open.

Got here no probs at all. A veritable cake walk. Flight arrived before time at around 5pm... none of the reported "chaos" at the airport and saw nothing in the way of chaos on the autobahn either. Went straight to the taxi rank at Munich Airport and asked if the driver could take us to Kitzbuhel. He didn't question the sanity for one second. Did it well under 2 hours. Called my original taxi driver and he still tried to claim it was chaos!
Anyway, would you now like me to describe the day I just had in the cold, white fluffy stuff? Later, it's beer o'clock here and I'm checking out.

Hi JohnHill
Definitely give us an update - I'm heading to Kitzbuhel on Saturday so would love some on the ground info...

JohnHill, the Munich Taxi drivers are used to being asked to drive people to Kitz. Happens all the time.
You were lucky! There definitely was complete chaos on the Autobahn on Saturday night, especially on the A8. I guess it just goes to show how effective these guys are at clearing the roads once they get going.
I'm looking out of my office window at a snowstorm right now. Wonder how the roads are going to be on the way home tonight!

mountain mad, well you certainly won't be short of snow. Back home now but it basically didn't let up snowing for the entire 48 hrs I was there (taxi back to Munich a breeze, flight took off ahead of schedule, no chaos!). Conditions underfoot are simply great. Managed a long day of deepish powder today and mostly untracked. Not many people about to get in the way either. No queues and the new lift over to the Jochberg side is darn impressive.
