Hi to all, been browsing the forum for a while but never posted before, so here goes... I'm taking my wife to Chamonix in march and would like to know what kind of activities are available to non skiers/boarders (she has mobility problems and needs a walking stick so cant be anything too strenuous) Its the first time she's coming with me, I usually just take my 2 boys, and want to make sure she has a decent time. Is Chamonix the right place to take her? Can you get around ok? Any advice appreciated, thanks. Ludo

Ludocanu, Well as the zookeeper has disappeared, I will do my best to answer your question!. Chamonix has tons on shopping opportunities, lots of restaurants, cafe's and bars. There is a casino, a cinema, museum and a large sports centre with a variety of activities. A trip on the train up to the Mer du Glace would be a great day out, there is a hotel and restaurant at the terminus on the edge of the glacier. She could also take the cable car up the Aguille du Midi, for spectacular views, access is good, restaurant and cafe within the cable car station. Round town, there is a bus service, which serves the lift stations and various villages on the outskirts. IMV, there is tons to do in Chamonix, more than most ski resorts in Europe.

I've not been, but I get the impression that Chamonix is one of the better places for a non-skier.

Geography is not my strongest point, and I am sure someone will correct me if my distances are way out, but I think it is feasible to get to Annecy for a day trip from Chamonix. Annecy has got to be one of prettiest French Alpine towns and if you fancied a day off skiing to take her there in the middle of the week, I am sure she'd love it. This might depend on whether you will have your own transport, though.

And/or, more easily available and nice on a sunny day - go up the gondola and cable to Le Brevant and eat out in the sun on the sheltered terrace, looking at Mont Blanc.
There is also a good museum with stuff about early climbers and even the war (trying to hoist a gun up the mountain during small-scale fighting).

snowball, I had forgotten all about the great views from the restaurant at the top of Brevent. The ladies loo also has a spectacular view of Chamonix, best viewed sitting down

SkiBod, I couldn't agree with you more, I know Annecy pretty well as I grew up there and I'll always remember it as the best and prettiest place in France. I wont get the opportunity to go this time but it's something I've promised myself and my wife (I haven't been back in 28 years....) I just need to find a good deal for le Grand Bornand, which is the closest resort to Annecy, (we used to go there with my primary school).
Anyway, what about all that snow.... C'est fantastic n'est ce pas!! Cant wait for Chamonix on the 14th, Avoriaz on 28th and Val Tho on 8th April.

Hi, and welcome,
Excellent choice if one's a non-skier, all as per above plus you can catch the bus over to Courmayeur through the tunnel for a day out, with lunch in Italy and plenty of shopping while you ski.......

Welcome, the one day I spent in Chamonix this season the pavements were a hazzard to those who dont have any mobility impairments but then I wasnt too impressed with anything there in comparison to other resorts  .
I have friends and family with a variety of mobility issues and due to the amount of ice / snow that is left on pavements there and all the stuff they leave outside sh
However I do hope your experiences there were better than mine, let us know afterwards.
