Poster: A snowHead

Been skiing some variable snow these past few days and while skiing the soft bumps is fun and at times has resulted in some joyous transfers my lumbar spine is really not appreciative and longs for some groomer cruising.
So am I doing it wrong? My knees seem to be flexing and coping fine. Or is it just aging that backs don't like the abuse of youth?

Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person

My mate plays golf.
He suffered for years form a bad back.
Turned out it was his golfing footwear giving him bad posture when golfing.
Maybe time to invest in some custom footbeds?
I think there is a story of a footballer & his football boots giving him constant back trouble as well.

How much conditioning/flexibility/mobility training, do you do in the off season... In particular, core, lower back, abs and hip flexors?
I have had a spinal fusion, so my lower back is tight, weak and inflexible.....but with constant, year round training, I manage fairly well....when I'm not fighting them, that is.
If my back is stiff, I ski more slowly over the top, allowing the bump to unweight me and turning on the crest.
This has to be at a pace that doesn't shoot you into the air, as the turn doesn't involve absorption.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Footbeds are just fine. Back is better today once warmed up. Bumps were less harsh too which helped.

I think you have it right, unfortunately. I love good bumps but one missed absorption (so the back takes the hit rather then the legs) and I pay for days. Get more selective; leave the shiny egg cartons for the young bucks but try some soft, shallower bumps when available to keep your saw sharp.

Bump skiing shouldn’t really be too hard on backs or knees...
