 Poster: A snowHead

I've been using a pack that's bigger than needed the last few years, the thinking being that the compression straps would shrink it down, but it doesn't really work like that.
So I've been googling and Snowheading and the most popular seem to be Dakine and Ortovox. Seeing that I've already got a largish one I'm going to go fairly small, thinking of the Dakine Heli pack at 12l, or an Ortovox at 16.
Questions:
Will the Dakine 12l hold Avi gear, spare layer, bottle of water, skins, sandwich?
What is the difference between Ortovox Freerider and Crossrider?

You like the German word and multiple exclamation marks.
The DaKine heli backpack is fine for the stuff you list, comes with a shovel pocket, and works well on snow.
I haven't used the Ortovox. Try them on to see which you like.

Mr P is very happy with his BD Dawn Patrol 25 pack (Christmas pressie from me). In fact the pack comes in 2 sizes, and I got him the S/M which is 23 litres. It's very neat and tidy.

a big vote for the Deuter Provoke, my girlfriend has one and I think that it is much nicer than my Dakine helipack. For the amount of stuff that you want to carry I think that it is about right, you might struggle to fit all that in a 12 liter pack

@Tom Doc, I've got a Dakine Heli (11lt if memory serves) going spare if you're interested. Almost new and I've only used it a couple of times.

If it's any help, I've just returned an Ortovox tour ride 30 as the quality was very poor.. stitching was incomplete around the zips and other areas starting to fray straight out of the packet. My avvy gear is all Ortovox and I've been really happy with it, so I was surprised at how bad the bag was..
That's not to say they're all like it, but had I seen it in a shop beforehand I wouldn't have handed over the dollar...
Wanted a Black Diamond dawn patrol 32, but couldn't find one at a decent price, might have to fork out once I get a refund (if I get one, here's a big warning for an online retalier called Extremepie, extremely slow communications, this has been dragging on for over a month...)

The heli 12 will hold that stuff ok. I'm happy with mine, though did mod it a bit for more convenience and an extra pocket.

I got a ortovox haute route think I paid €130 and the main zip broke after a few days I replaced it with a BCA sqwall excellent pack and only £30
