The name has undesirable connotations, but could the vast wilderness of Siberia be a ski destination in future?
This article from Pravda concerns the plans of Latvian investors to create a ski resort in the Ermakovsky district of Krasnoyarsk region of Western Siberia.
The mountain range is vast - 240km by more than 600km - though not unusually high - 2000 to 2600m. But I'd imagine that winter temperatures would ensure low base elevations for resorts and good verticals.
Here's a map of that region, but I've not been able to locate Ermakovsky.
Also, I'm not sure how much - if any - downhill skiing already goes on in Siberia. Georgia and the Caucasus are often talked about for exciting skiing, though that area has had significant troubles in recent years. There's also plenty of skiing around Moscow, apparently.

As I recall Krasnoyarsk hits -40 in Winter and +40 in Summer (I had a job there a few years back, fortunately it started as a paper job and stayed one). The 4 day train journey from Moscow should suit U perfectly though

So Alan, you were sent to the Russian front, were you? What did you do wrong? Sorry, I shouldn't be making light jokes about that.

Linds, well it's probably moi that's the thicko. I just had the impression that beetroot is the Spam of Russia - as in beetroot and egg, beetroot and chips, beetroot and beans, beetroot wine etc. but maybe in Siberia it's cabbage?

Alan, we're definitely looking at a pot of delicious Siberian borscht here. Funnily enough, I bought a pack of uncooked beets a couple of days ago, so a cabbage would do nicely.
