 Poster: A snowHead

Well, unless you count a single run I did in Caerleon in 1996*, this is the first time I've skied on real, outdoor snow in the UK.
We went to Hay Bluff for a stroll yesterday and found between 20 and 40 centimetres of snow on the top. We spotted a few people bagging and sledging, so decided to go back today.
I think this is the first time a  hat has appeared at a Welsh ski resort, too!
* The snow was so wet that I had to pole all the way down, so I don't count that as skiing.

hyweljenkins, Great photos. I skied in Snowdonia for a day on a school out door pursuits trip in the 1979 we were based at a place called Plas Dol y mock. That was the only 1st time I skied and the only time out side in the UK. We had about 2 foot of snow to hike up through in old leather boots and very old planks, absolutely no instruction just told to face where we wanted to go and fall over if we couldn't stop. Great fun and got me hooked.

saxabar, It's about five miles from Hay on Wye. If you know Hay on Wye it's easy to find on the road to Capel-y-ffin. After about five miles you end up with Hay Bluff on your left and Lord Hereford's Knob in front of you. Oooh err.

Wow. I did a couple of runs at South Common in Lincoln, some years back. But you more than have the edge with that lot.

saxabar, it's a bit bare, as you can see, but it was very cold up there, peaking at zero celcius at 1pm, and clouds were closing in. We got five or six runs in - the ski lifts haven't been built yet, you see.
There's a large pay & display car park just off the town centre - the car park is the one that slopes away from the road and is next to a school and some fields. There's a little crafft centre next to it. Leave the car park and turn right. Less than mile or so on there's a sharpish right-hander with a junction on the left. There's a sign for "Town Cetnre" pointing back the way you came on that bend. Turn left and follow the road.
If you do get a picture book that shows the roads, it's marked as "Hay Bluff" on the map with a trig. point, but you might have to go for Capel-y-ffin in the index.
If you do go and there's not enough to ski or board, have a snowball fight - it was perfect for that.
