Poster: A snowHead

Got back this weekend from fantastic week in Bormio. Now looking to book for next year in Italy again. We have decided on Selva Gardena, but I just need a hotel recommendation. 3* is what we are looking for, with centre of town location. There will possibly be 24 of us so I need to get going on the booking a.s.a.p! I'd be really grateful for any ideas as I have been trawling the net for 3 hours already.

Back when I was racing, the annual stop at the Hotel Laurin was one of the high-points of our tour around the Alps. Perhaps not the biggest rooms, but a friendly atmosphere and always fantastic food. If you had had a disappointing result in the race that day, lunch would always cheer you up immediately!

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

By the way, the Selva ski school is now run by Peter Runggaldier, who was one of the friendliest and nicest blokes I met on the World Cup tour:

We stayed here a couple of years ago, and had a good week. Right in the middle of town, approx 1 min walk to gondola and ski back to across the road.

Selva Gardena looks a charming place. Would there be anything for a non skiing grandma to get up to here? Fit and active but late 70s so some indoor stuff is also important. i'm looking for somewhere for a family hol at Xmas or New Year next year

I can also recommend Hotel Corona 3*. It's in a perfect location for the lifts and is situated right in the middle of village. You can almost ski back right to the Hotel from either side of the valley to.
Stayed there last January and it now has a sauna and wellnes centre which is free.

surfski, Sarah L, Thank you so much. We are in the process of booking the hotel Corona right now. The Laurin, recommended by Martin Bell looked wonderful, but the prices for 2007 were a little too much for us. Surfski and Sarah L, is it worth paying the extra to stay on the south side of the hotel? As this is DIY holiday, any recommendations for airport transfers? Hopefully this holiday will be as good as Bormio. If you love Italy and skiing then could'nt speak highly enough of Bormio. Town is beautiful (medieval), 10 minute taxi ride to roman baths (wallow in hot springs whilst looking at the slopes in the distance). Town centre Hotel, San Lorenzo, wonderful food and very comfortable surroundings for £350 p.p. half-term week. Also no queues for lifts. Possible only downside for half-term, a couple of british schools for their annual trips. A bit of a struggle in the hire shop with their boots thrown all over the place! - no problem really.

Oh yes, number one downside to Bormio is long transfer from airport (milan 4 hours, Bergamo 3 hours). Worth it in the end though!
