 Poster: A snowHead

Due out to Mayrhofen on 19th Jan. Weather forecast seems to be largely much the same as last couple of weeks. Can anyone recommend runs, areas in the wider Mayrhofen / Zillertal area to head to when viz is poor.

@kb36, the Zillertal doesn't have a lot of low-lying runs in trees because the valley floor is very low, so most of the skiing starts with an uplift to a base level and then rises from there. Having said that, the bowl between Penken and Gerent above Mayrhofen is OK, as you can't really go too far wrong, but that's a very limited area. In heavy snow and low visibility, the glacier and anything over about 2300m will be in whiteout conditions, and in the rest of the valley there are similar problems due to a lack of low-level runs through trees or where the links will be closed or very difficult. As an example, the lower parts at Zell am Ziller are OK, but the link over the top into the rest of the Zillertal Arena might be closed, and even if it is open the run off the top is featureless and very disorientating in low visibility. The area above Gerlos is maybe a better option, but that's a bit of a trek from Mayrhofen.

@kb36, if you're looking for 60kms per day of skiing despite the low viz, you'll be out of luck. You'll manage 15-20 or so by repeating runs and staying low, and the conditions could of course change. Or you could as you say stay in the pub, but that seems pretty pointless on a skiing holiday before the lifts shut.

It was snowing a fair bit when we were in Mayrhofen a couple of seasons ago. We had a lot of fun. The weather broke for a day so we caught the bus to Hintertux. Incredible scenes.

Quite happy to do some laps, don't need huge mileage, very much a holiday type rider (yes i board) so anything over 30 km is a big day for me in the fairest weather

Yeah, given that I believe the Zillertal has had some fresh snow recently (!) then the skiroute number 17 on the Kaltenbach ski map down through the trees to the village of Aschau should be open (they run a frequent ski shuttle bus from the end of the trail in Aschau back to the Kaltenbach gondola). https://www.skiresort.info/ski-resort/kaltenbach-hochzillertalhochfuegen-ski-optimal/trail-map/

The home run in Kaltenbach is a nice long red, although it does often fill up with incompetent skiers at the end of the day. But if you go to Zell you can get the lovely long red 18 down through the trees past the famous Schnitzelhutte then keep going on to the rarely open home run. Top fun.
Kaltenbach gondola is in walking distance of the train station, for Zell you need a 5min ski bus journey from the Zell train station. I prefer both these areas to the Penken.

I seem to remember 17 in Kaltenbach to be quite enjoyable but not so for 1. But maybe its condition dependent. And it does get busy.
