In getting ready for skiing next week I put new batteries in my avi transceiver only to get a "457 SEARCH failure" message which persist after making sure I'm away from any electronics. The manual states that this means it needs repair, and the repair centre appears to be in Switzerland!
I've e-mailed the service address but in the meantime has anyone had experience of this and the cost and duration involved?
I doubt i'll get it sorted in time for my trip to Avoriaz on 12th January but fortunately/unfortunately the likelyhood of any worthwhile off piste skiing looks rather low.
I will definately need it for an off piste week at the end of February
Thanks in advance for any advice

457 Send Failure I think.
Did you take it outside away from things like cars, garage doors basically anything metallic, and then test it? Even reinforced concrete can affect the transceiver.
How old is your beacon? Any more than 5 years and Mammut will probably not repair it for you and will suggest you buy new.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Definitely SEARCH failure, probably around 10 years old so it's looking like a replacement

Yes, probably better to change it.
Did you ever have a firmware upgrade?

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

No it's still on firmware 3.0, I understand 4.0 is the current version. In this day and age it seems a pain to have to send it away (abroad!) for a firmware update. I wonder if the current version has a USB port or similar to make updates easier?

You'll need to Register first of course.

might be worth chatting with the guys at facewest, I have a similarly aged beacon (not quite as old) and they were able to update it for me

Thanks, Facewest can only do diagnostics and Firmware update, and would have to send it back to Switzerland for any actual repairs needed.

I think I'd be changing it after 10 years service, they have ferrite antennae inside which can get jarred and the whole thing may be out of "tune", better safe than sorry and the new units probably have significant improvements....
I had to retire my original Tracker (12 years old) a few years back because the direction arrows were giving spurious readings, contacted BCA and they said they wouldn't repair it as it was most likely the antennae but offered me a new unit at around half price, so may be worth taking it up with Mammut/Barryvox!

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

Only other things to add that I've encountered with the 457 error are the following;
-Magnetic buttons on jackets
-Heated gloves
-Tin foil from cigarette packs
-Buried electrical cables

I only ever got the 457 send failure message, and that was due to interference. The Barryvox does self check itself all the time checking with its own receiving antenna, each time it send out a pulse. Since you are getting the much rarer 457 search failure, it really does suggest a hardware issue.
You didn’t mention if it was a Barryvox Pulse, or the previous Barryvox model.
My Barryvox Pulse is still going strong after many years (now on the excellent 4.0 update), but I also now have the ‘new’ Barryvox S, which is an improvement in every way.

You know it makes sense.

I have only had excellent experiences with Mammut customer services in both the UK and Switzerland. Too late for you this time but don't write them off. You can get through to the people that matter and if you need something quickly they are perfectly capable of doing it.
Petzl, on the other hand, are the complete opposite... and Arc'teryx are going the same way.

The current Barryvox / Barryvox S has a feature to do a software upgrade from another unit wirelessly. Obviously only handy if you happen to have a buddy with the more recent firmware on theirs. (presumably aimed at businesses running a fleet) https://uk.mammut.com/service/barryvox/barryvox-upgrade/#1
You can also do an upgrade at any of the (rather large) list of avalanche saftey centres... https://uk.mammut.com/service/avalanche-airbags/avalanche-safety-center/#10
