Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better!
Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Hi all,
My partner and I are considering a new year getaway to La Clusaz and are interested to know whether the touring opportunities in the area are likely to be good that early given the low altitude.
We are confident off piste skiers (though I am definitely no expert) and embryonic tourers who started venturing out by ourselves at the end of last season.

- go to Bornes - Aravis in the Massif/Departement drop down and the world is your lobster...
All the North facing combes accessed from Les Confins (just beyond La Clusaz) are well worth a look (Paccaly, Gd Cret etc), Combe a Marion from Col des Aravis also another classic...
Not sure how much snow there is yet, but skiing La Clusaz tomorrow so will have more of an idea after that.

Not much depth off piste yet is the only problem...the N facing Aravis combes

mentions are classics but also comparatively rocky compared to the lower grassy meadows which are skiable now - both La Clusaz and LGB open tomorrow. Mind you, more snow is forcast so hopefully all the playgrounds should be up and running by New Year.

Further to the above, it is (not surprisingly) relatively thin but skiable off piste (with care) above the Balme mid-station (ie 1800m-ish) - there is snow right down to valley floor but the locals I was with were definitely advising against skiing below mid-station level. Plenty of tracks heading over into Bella Cha, and the other Combes will be well travelled also. Snow forecast tomorrow though, so depending on Iso 0 level that should help.
