Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Salomon Climbing Skins

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hi everyone.
I picked up a set of 2017 Salomon Explore MTN 95 skis as I would like to try a little ski touring this year when the snow comes to the Lakes. I need to get some climbing skins for these but I'm finding it difficult to find the appropriate ones. I think Salomon do not sell them any more. My options seem to be (1) but the skins from the 2018/2019 versions and see if they fit, or but a different brand and cut them to size. Can anyone help me out with a recommendation?
Cheers!

@car1ine, Welcome to SnowHeads snowHead

You will soon come across 2 terms relating to skins, ‘Grip’ and ‘Glide’. The means exactly what they say, and are opposite. A high grip skin will make going up easier as you need to expend less effort, but the downside is it won’t slide as easily, making moving on the flat less energy efficient. A high glide skin is much more efficient on the flat, but requires more effort on the up. As you become more experienced, you will work out which combination works for you.

I’ve always been a fan of G3 Alpinst skins, either the normal and high traction versions. They come in-cut, but with one of the best and easiest trimming tool. No doubt others will be along with their favourites.
